Flood Plains --> Burning Sands?

Which works alright if you are on pangea but not if you are on islands so that hell terrain won't spread into other pplz' lands.

Actually, hell terrain does spread over oceans, it just doesn't show, afaik. so if there is another AV civ across a narrow chanel, they should get hell fairly soon, though if there is a large ocean, I'm not sure how long it'd take.

Or simply make a hell alternative of flood plains, "shores of styx". (river acheron is already used )

I second this. Any other desert terrain can be terraformed into Plains before hell cometh. I'm even ok with it not being as good as normal Floodplains. It just really brings the Sheaim research engine to halt when all of Tebryn's 3F 6G Towns are destroyed.

Perhaps Hell could should in someways in the ocean as 'blackwater' or some evil combination of hydrogen and oxygen...

Blackwater sounds interesting, but I think they've already done something with the oceans. Don't they boil at one point?
