I could swear that I saw a tip on how to turn on the "flying cam" mode (or something like that) the other day while browsing these forums from work.

Unfortunately, when I went back to find the details from home, I just can't find it. Anyone wanna clue me in, or was I dreaming about Civ4 again and never saw anything like that?

It is true and it was on Sirian and Sulla's Cuban Isolationists thread. To enable it you hit CTRL-F or SHift-F (I forgot but it will say "Flying camera mode enabled" when done correctly. First, find in your documents Sid Meier's Civilization 4. Then, open the _Civ4Config with notepad (that is what I used) and look for

; Allow Camera Flying
AllowFlying = 0.

Next, change the 0 to 1. Lastly, save the changes you made and then start up a game in Civ4 and hit either CTRL-f or Shift-f and you will enable Camera Flying. It is great for seeing stuff extremely up close or far away. Also, you can spin 360 degrees with it.

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for - and my config file didn't have an entry at all, which is why I couldn't find it :p

Just cut & pasted it in and hit ctrl-f, and voila! Very cool.

It's not buggy, but my guess is that it was not enabled due to performance reasons.

The game engine doesn't seem to have a distance filter (meaning that it will not draw distant units, or that it has some sort of way of drawing distant units in a less detailed manner). So as soon as you tilt the flying camera up and can see the horizon, the game engine suddenly starts trying to draw units that are 50-100 tiles away.

Which, naturally, results in incredible video lag as your poor graphics card tries to render all of that additional detail.

(Note that a lot of installs don't seem to have FlyingCamera lines in the INI file, so you will have to add them at the appropriate place.)
