From a sporting perspective, a Club World Cup is entirely legitimate. There’s no reason why club competition should be monopolized by a handful of European leagues. It was refreshing to watch clubs from around the world compete, comparing their levels and styles. Let’s not forget we’re talking about a global sport.

That said, the way Infantino imposed it was clumsy, to say the least. The first edition should have been hosted in a country that actually cares about football, to give it a bit more prestige. The calendar was also a total mess, but that’s not only FIFA’s fault. UEFA made absolutely no effort to accommodate the tournament, even maintaining the largely irrelevant Nations League.
