Growth of forests? I built three on three patches of forest surrounding naked ground no roads etc... did not see any forest grow the entire game from any of the three.
Is the amount of extra growth very low?
Tha additional chance of spread is very low....
It's a 0.8% Chance a Forest will grow on a tile adjacent to a Forest Preserve each turn. So after making a Forest Preserve you will have to wait on average 125 turns for a forest to grow on a given adjacent plot.
It becomes a bit better with more preserves. A tile completely surrounded by 4 Forest Preserves (diagonal ones do not count) has a 3.2% chance to get a forest. It's - again on average - 31.2 turns we have to wait for a forest to grow there.
I mean in most cases the only time you build forest preserves is for your national park city, the basic bonus of the preserve is crap.
Nope. He's right: the average wait is, indeed, 125 turns. I think you've forgotten that it might happen on the 126th turn, or the 200th turn, or the 1,000,000-th turn...Splitting hairs here, but .....
0.8% chance means that it should happen on average every 125 turns.
Assuming this occurs, it could happen on the first turn, the 125th turn, or anywhere in between, so the average turn number should be around the 62/63 mark I think.
Why don't you try that experiment....Eg. If you rolled a die until a '6' showed up and repeated this enough times, you would expect the average number of rolls required for a '6' to be around 3.
