Growth of forests? I built three on three patches of forest surrounding naked ground no roads etc... did not see any forest grow the entire game from any of the three.

Is the amount of extra growth very low?

I didn't notice any growth but all of my forest preserves were surrounded by tiles which already had improvements and I don't think forests can spread to those squares.

The real reason to build preserves is for the bonuses they provide and specialists they give with a National Park.

The real reason to build them is not in question... we were told we get extra growth... That is what I am wondering about

TBH I think theres some effect that makes forest spread highly unlikely/impossible from mid-game on.

I'm generally extremely anal about leaving unimproved tiles near forest areas for as long as possible (my cities generally have minimal overlap so a large number of tiles/city will be unused for a long time) but I really can't remember the last time I had a forest spread in the AD.

I always play Marathon too, where forest spread should occur more often iirc.

If this is the case, it would explain why you don't see much forest spread even with preserves; a small bonus may be entirely overidden by this 'late game effect'.

Maybe the forest spread algorithm rolls a chance to spread, if true then a place to spread to, if invalid then fails anyway. Would perhaps explain why even a partially developed empire sees next to no forest spread.

I had one that spread, maybe 20-50 turns after the forest preserve was built, was in the 1800s or so

and forests spread all the time for me

I just built my first one today and it spread in about 20 turns or so. It was in an under developed corner of my land though, so that might have something to do with it too.

^^No...

The preserve works:... in my last game I got all the BFC of my Nat park ,except for 2 farms and a iron mine, covered by forest, with atleast 8 spreads from the Preserves....

The growth is ridiculously slow. Don't expect if you wait long enough your National Park will grow from 6 forests to 12. If you're lucky you'll see 1-2 extra. People here claimed that it's significant in Marathon game, but in standard game I think the designers simply set it too low.

PS. If you're patient enough, make sure the tiles are not improved.

Tha additional chance of spread is very low....

It's a 0.8% Chance a Forest will grow on a tile adjacent to a Forest Preserve each turn. So after making a Forest Preserve you will have to wait on average 125 turns for a forest to grow on a given adjacent plot.

It becomes a bit better with more preserves. A tile completely surrounded by 4 Forest Preserves (diagonal ones do not count) has a 3.2% chance to get a forest. It's - again on average - 31.2 turns we have to wait for a forest to grow there.

For the sake of completeness... The chance to spread withouth the forest preserve is 8 times smaller - 0.1% per adjacent forest.

Also the chance is cut in half by roads and is 0.0% if there is a unit on that plot and if the plot is imporved (with the exception of a Camp)

Considering you have to have unworked tiles for forest to spread, I think teh growth rate is way too low. I mean in most cases the only time you build forest preserves is for your national park city, the basic bonus of the preserve is crap.

I have a question regarding that spread rate. It seems to me forests spread quite often at the beginning of the game, but it basically stops even near the city I save it for National Park (so most forests not chopped). Is it just an illusion? I also feel that jungles spread faster than forests. So many times I saw jungles spread to cover my lovely gem tile before I get my worker out to mine it. If the odd is only 0.2% (one tile adjacent) or 0.4% (two tiles), it seems to me I've seen that way too often.

I had this impression too, but from the look of the code it has to be just a illusion.

The 0.1% is the chance the forest will spread at a choosen plot, with one adjacent forest...

The chance that the forest will spread at a random plot on the map is much higher of course, just by the number of plots... early game there is more forest, also there is more unroaded/unimproved plots adjacent to one... If you have 20 plots adjacent to some forsets within reach the chance that the forest will spread on one of those is already 2+ % each given turn...

Another possiblity to keep in mind is that forests will not spread to tiles with certain resources. If you don't have Steam Power and Industrialism yet, then there might be latent Coal or Aluminum preventing forest spread.

I build lots of preserves. I have yet seen forests or jungles spread at any increased rate.

Splitting hairs here, but .....
0.8% chance means that it should happen on average every 125 turns.
Assuming this occurs, it could happen on the first turn, the 125th turn, or anywhere in between, so the average turn number should be around the 62/63 mark I think.

Eg. If you rolled a die until a '6' showed up and repeated this enough times, you would expect the average number of rolls required for a '6' to be around 3.

That's not the basic bonus IMO, the fact that each one makes 1 citizen happy is. Especiallly since a Preserve that is on a tile which overlaps two cities gives that bonus to both of them.

Nope. He's right: the average wait is, indeed, 125 turns. I think you've forgotten that it might happen on the 126th turn, or the 200th turn, or the 1,000,000-th turn...

Eg. If you rolled a die until a '6' showed up and repeated this enough times, you would expect the average number of rolls required for a '6' to be around 3.
Why don't you try that experiment....
