Sorry if this has been brought up before, alot of things happning on this forum right now.

Anyway, anyone else noticed the fortify bonus in the manual? 25% on forftying turn, and 50% continusily after. Looks to me that this is a great buff, and mobility would mather even more now. units got a base movement of 2 now, so you could move, then fortiy, maybe to offset the flat land bonus. Hell, what if you got a road (or railroad) up to a forested hill ( maybe even forted or citadel just to exagurate (sp?), you could theoretacly move a good defender there, fortify for halv the bonus ( now 25%, was total in cIV ) and make a shitload of pain for the would be attacker. and if he dont break through, you get a reward of 25% more bonus.

i like this new buff. makes forts more important, map more important and combat more fun :D . dough its gonna be a hell of a nut to crack to be a good general on both offence and defence.

oh cant wait to play this game :D

I was very pleased with the 50% bonus for fortifying. I'm wondering if that applies to ranged combat as well, though I strongly suspect that it does.

but damn, this will make offensive wars a real PITA. You're absolutely right, mobility will be more important than ever.

This probably makes ranged units even more important since they don't take damage while attacking, while melee units are in for some pain vs +50% and whatever terrain bonuses there are.

Hm... China will be rather difficult to break through, then. If they have a fort (50%, possibly more for a citadel [manual does not provide a number for citadel]), an [improved] great general (we don't know how much better China's great generals are. A normal great general is 25%, so let's say 40% for China), and extra fortification bonuses (50%), as well as any bonuses from terrain (hills = +25%), they could be receiving huge defensive bonuses. So a normal civilization will receive +150% if all conditions are right. China will receive +165% (though that's a bit of a guess). It might be possible to receive more with a citadel. If so, China could be receiving something like a +175% defense bonus on these tiles. That'll be a tough cookie to break - especially when the citadel itself also attacks!

:Edit: Diplomat32 says it's 45% for Chinese great general, so ~180% for China on a citadel.

As China... slap a spearman into a fort and fortify and let the tanks come to you... ;)

Im sure it applies to ranged units too because they get a promotion called Volley which deals +25% damage against fortified units.

Lol, here's a fun one... put a Chinese giant death robot in a citadel on a hill with a supporting great general. Assuming a +180% defense bonus, he will have 420 combat strength.

The strat guide says that the Chinese GG gives +45% combat bonus.

Except the GDR doesn't receive defensive bonuses...so it would be fun if it worked.

Given that units get -33% on flatland two turns of fortification make it so they at least do not have a penalty to strength (at 25% they still have 8% penalty).

The major issue is that rough terrain or fortress stacked fortification would pile on very quickly such that you'd have to soften them up (slowly) with ranged attacks before assaulting with your melee.

Someone suggested somewhere that attacking a fortified unit reduced its fortification bonus.
Don't know if its true, but that would be a good call.

If I saw that, I'd just nuke it. Kill the GDR, the General, and the Citadel.

well if the raw strength of the unit declines, then its fortification bonus will necessarily be reduced.

well if the raw strength of the unit declines
Strength doesn't decline even after losing hitpoints. Only damage declines. The amount of damage done to you is unchanged.
Whereas if the fortification bonus declines, the damage done to you increases.

The point was; suppose there is a unit with an insanely high strength after fortification bonus. If you attack it with a weak unit, even if you don't manage to do any damage, you might still reduce the fortification bonus making it easier for the next unit to attack.

strength is increased, so yes.

@arihman

Fortification bonus being reduced after being attacked, would be a really cool way of doing it.

i think i read somwhere that you lose about 1/2 of your dmg.

if you at 50% hp, you deal 25% less. you lost 30% hp, you dmg goes down 15%.

anyway, seeing as also tile improvements dont increase base tile to much, i dont see why player wont switch a (semi) useless tiles that probably not gonna get worked to a fort as a premesure.
