Forum Organization

i dont like that way to devide it, because by the end of the game, the Game Mechanics subforum will just become the most important and the other will become this games RPG, also that will mean you have to look in lots of different places to find out infomation.

OK, that's a valid concern but I think you might be thinking the game mechanics subforum would need to have a lot of traffic. At the end of the game it should all be roleplay once we're on cruise control, no?

I'm going to take the role of dissenting opinion on this one. What was wrong with the existing organization, aside from the little-used registry stickies? I can't really find anything wrong with the organization per se. Sure, we have people who don't do a good job on their government threads, but polls and citizen discussions were just fine. As for RPG, I liked having "side games" like the PBEMs, Provo's short-lived stock market system, and the like in a separate forum, even if the role play isn't concentrated there. Just call it the "misc" forum instead.
Is there any particular reason why such things couldn't go in the citizens' forum instead? It's not as if either that or the RPG forum have been brimming over with activity in the last couple of games. Having both components of the game interacting with each other in the same subforum might just spice things up a bit.

I think many of the RPG stories would be better served being part of the citizens thread. A few threads that were of a RPGing nature apeared on the Citizens forum, and they did better than any thread in the RPG.

I can't tell from the comments whether my suggestion is a bad idea or if I'm not communicating it well enough...
  • Main forum -- welcome, faq, constitution, judicial log, turnchats
  • Citizen's forum -- all discussions which are not about "game mechanics". Basically anything which can be talked about as though we're really citizens of our chosen civ. Role play goes here.
  • Government forum -- government offices. Roleplay about government offices.
  • Misc forum -- Things which don't translate well into in-game.
Role play is not mandatory -- but instead of shields we talk about production or something else more realistic. We don't talk about modern age stuff while we're in the middle ages. Pretty much if it's not plausible that real citizens of the civ we're playing would be able to talk about it, then it goes in misc. We do not have to invent imaginary characters and do the full-blown RPGish thing -- just get rid of number crunching by focusing more on "soft role play". Of course if someone wants to role play "hard core" then by all means go ahead. :D

In my case I get what you are trying to say, I just don't agree with it. ;)

I think the game would be better off for revisiting the "make of it what you will" spirit of DG1, in which threads frequently oscillated between gameplay and roleplay to the point that it was hard to tell which was the driving force at any given moment. I think it's telling that this started to wane from DG2 onwards with the creation of the RPG forum and the first steps towards separation of those two aspects of the demogame.

DS,

My main comment about this is that it simply won't work. Most people don't care enough about WHERE they post things already. Look at the Office threads in the Government forum - how often are comments posted in there vs the citizen forum. Most are in the citizen forum.

Likewise, look at the previous DG. The idea was to keep long-term and immediate planning seperate, but people didn't want to/couldn't hold back, so it didn't happen.

This will happen here, as well. Gentle and not-so-gentle reminders won't help. We could ask the mods to aggressively patrol, but do you really want to have them punish someone because they didn't post in the right forum? I don't.

It's not a bad idea, but I just don't see it working. Sorry.

So what's the exact forum organization going to be? I'm going to need to know if we're going to have the DG7 forum up soon...

It looks like we need a base forum, citizens, government, and polls. Drop RPG and add "Team PBEM & Other" in its place. Ginger Ale and RegentMan are negotiating subforums for the team game.

If anyone disagrees with this please post or forever hold your peace. :D

CT, can forum names be changed relatively easily? I would expect that but don't know how the software works.

Yes it can.

I also need specific threads that go in each one.

Well, I was toying with the idea of calling the main, public part of the MTDG forum the "Multi-Team Demogame UN Forum" or something of the sort. Quite a mouthful, I know, but it tells its purpose well enough.

I guess it can go something like this:

Main Demogame VII Forum
Spoiler DGVII Subforums :
DGVII - Citizens
DGVII - Government
DGVII - Polls
MTDG - UN Forum
Spoiler MTDG Subforums :

Team 1 Private Forum
Team 2 Private Forum
Team 3 Private Forum
Team Whomp Private Forum

Of course, the private forums are up to Thunderfall. I hope my presentation of the layout wasn't too confusing.

RegentMan: We had some non-team PBEM's, stock market game, murder game, etc. in DG6. I was hoping to use the multi-team public forum as a miscellaneous forum so these items would continue to have a home, without a need for a RPG forum. The UN forum should see very little activity on its own, other than turn trackers and maybe ongoing story items that the teams choose to de-spoiler.

Any problem with making it "Multi-Team and Misc Games" as I'm requesting?

It seems we've lost the driving force behind changing things. My preference would be to keep things how they were the last 2 games, except we might want to drop some of the underutilized sticky ones. Again a mod can move threads, and we can wait a bit to open some of them to make it easier on you. :D

I think it would be easier on things if the MTDG UN forum and Misc. Forum were two different forums. That way, MTDG participants don't get confused as to which threads apply to them.

Signup thread, needed things, FAQ, team listings ... I think there is enough use for the UN forum by itself. Rulings, team representitives polls, etc. Combining RPG (SP) and MP isn't a good idea, imo.

Chieftess: I have contacted TF - he will create the private forums for us when all 4 teams decide on their names, so do not worry about those.

Has anyone decided yet if we will have an Information Office or not? If we do have one, i will once again volunteer to run it. IMO, keeping the public informed with basic game information is nesseccery to keeping participation up. A lot of non C3C owning citizens left, because of lack of information. I will make sure the Office is updated with Game Information and links to all sorts of things. :)
