I've tried turning of Javascript and other active scripting.

I've tried Thunderfall's recommended pop up killer.

I've tried other pop up killers.

And none of them worked on the pop ups on this site, but I just found this one today and I'll be darned it works! It's a 70Kb program that runs in your system tray. Whenever a pop up appears you pull up the program window and add that to the list of windows for it to KILL. Then, the next time it tries to appear, all you'll see is a flash as it tries to load up, and then it disappears. I've found it particularly useful for this site, since the same window usually pops up for a day or two.

As always, be carefull downloading it. I can't guaruntee that it won't mess up your computer. However, I haven't had any trouble with it yet; in fact, I thought it was a blessing that I found it.

AtGuard will also kill the pop-ups (I use AtGuard 3.22, 2 years old). I was not aware of the extent of the pop-up problems until I read about it and then enabled them. Some pop-ups get thru, but then you just paste their URL source into the block function of AtGuard, and the pop-up does not pop up anymore!

For HTML-savvy people, you can see the "tricky" method they use by examining the web page source code.

I've had ads pop up from several pages back in my history. I think theyre trying to disquise where the ad really came from.

I sympathize with webmasters but with the exception of most porn sites, civfanatics has more pop ups than any other site i frequent.

Hey, that pow! program is made by AnalogX. I know that guy from the winamp.com forums.

Too bad it is NOT working AT ALL.

Thanks BlueMonday for the link.

Before I joined here, I downloaded it and I have to say it works great.

Finally I too, decided to use a popup killer. Alas, more problems occured. First your link doesn't work for me BM. Each time I click on it I have a new html page, instead of a download dialog box. So I got Pow on another site. But once installed, it keeps on giving the following error message

<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/image_uploads/Runtime.jpg" border=0>

Ok, it closes all the popups but displays this error message so it's not really a good deal for me. I wonder if I can have pow also closing it's own runtime error message windows

Genghis, I think you've got bigger problems than pop up windows. I just checked the link and it still works (it goes right where it should) and to me your error message sounds to be a much larger problem than a pop up stopper not working.

I thought you were one of the Mac people here; if so, What the hell are you doing trying to install this program on a Mac? However, if your a PC person and the computer keeps acting up because of the pop up killer then travel over to http://www.analogx.com and talk with the guy who made it.

. If your using a work internet connection, it must be a problem with the firewall or the network. In that case, go find your network administrator and tell him the deal.

*Of course, try not to tell him you spend most of your work time here.
