Fox-01 -- Post War Japan

Hey badger, I recall you wanted in on Fox-03 ... want me to reserve a space for you? Happy vacating!

Kikinit: hmm... I was thinking why wasn't observatories/laboratories rushed all over the Japanese cities to hasten our research?

I see we have hatty to thanks for allowing our access ... Let's gift her the city and see if we can start a war before we launch ... :mischief:

More commendations/comments tomorrow. Way too late now. But good job getting the Eiffel Tower! :D

-

@Grey, I'd certainly like to be in on Fox-03, if you aren't too far along by the time I get back! Thanks!

Um.. On the Eiffell Tower. Not much use to us is it? I rushed it because it was 50+ turns and not too expensive. Not really a good reason in hindsight.

Grey, I didn't rush too many other things because I wanted to keep the money for the space elevator. That eiffel tower money would have been better spent on an observatory or lab or 2. They are expensive to rush by the way.

It may be worth running 0% research for a turn or two to get a heap of money and then you will be able to rush lots.

Badger, see you when you get back.

Eiffel has its use, at least it gives us free towers everywhere. But it might be better to have it in the GPFarm, increases it use as a GP points generator as well. But Pretty well played set of turns, despite it being dry (it would be anyway, since its a matter of going through motion now).

I was surprises to see Thrusters being built ... then I recall namliaM has set us on the Satellite path ... that means I have to change the building strategy a bit.

Setting Matsuyama to build thrusters is debatable... I was hoping to reserve it for the Bay, but now I guess it will have to build the Chamer, and Kyoto build the Bay. Depends on how soon we research Freezer -> Genetics. Well, I will have to look at the save before I can devise a research/build strategy.

Yes, good call on tuning science to 0 ... it will let our production catch up with research. It also give me funds to start a World War ...

Oh by the way, if you were wondering, I GOT IT.

-

Yes, Matsuyama building thrusters is debatable. The problem was, i ran out of places that could build things fast enough. The last 2 cities I picked were 18 turns to build casings and next was 30+. So I had to make a choice on putting the thrusters in higher production cities to get them done in a similar time scale. All of those times will shorten once the space elevator is completed anyway.

I am sure your clear thinking will sort out all my muddled thinking anyway. ;)

The thing is, you don't have to build the casings and thrusters all done in a similar time scale. The important thig is to have ALL ships parts built on the same time scale.

For instance, looking at the home advisor screen you posted, both Osaka and Nara could have easily built us a casing and a thrusters each way before the engine is completed. This means that Shimonoseki could have started on the 3rd thrusters instead of the 5th Casing, leaving Matsuyama free to build destroyers until Bay is unlocked. I suspect Shimonoseki can even build a casing and thrusters before the Engine, so even Kytoto can be left free to build the elevator ...

I see I have a GA lined up for myself once I built the elevator ...

From the Kyoto Palace ...

Ministers were seen hurrying along, as Emperor Kikinit handover the throne to the then-Regent GreyFox. Rumors had it that Kikinit was rushing to see a baseball game ...

Anyway, back to the palace ... Greyfox is again changing things that were so magnificently handled by Kikinit ...

For Kyoto, they were ordered to starve at the expand of rushing the Casing in 2 turns (instead of 3):

For Edo, Merchants were temporarily asked to fo fishing in order for Edo to grow.

And to the pleasant surprise of the ministers, this is the only change....

Minister A to Minister B: Tyrant GreyFox must be getting soft ...

And indeed he is. It was a few years later then GreyFox discovered he should have changed someting in Osaka:

He was heard mumbling: "Why hire an engineer when the same wage is better off spent on general white-collars working in a town?"

From The Ministry of Science ...

With the apparent change ofrom his iron-fist ruling style to a more benevolent approach, the research department were left happily researching, and they discovered 3 techs:

Of-course, things got helped with the sacrifice of the Great Artist and Merchant to trigger a Golden Age in 1939.

Intermission ...

We interrupt this reprot with a special report: Our correspondents in Kyoto reports that the fairy tale is true afterall. Jack, a lonely engineer, bought home a magical seed with 888 gold and planted it in his backyard in Kyoto.

The beanstalk grew and grew, and overnight, it reaches the heaven!!!

Engineer Jack them climbed up the beanstalk, never to be seen again.

This inspired an artist to create the story "Jack and The Beanstalk". The artist then engaged a merchant to sell the story all over the Japnese empire. The Japanese people were totally awed by the story, and this inspired a Golden Age!!!

-- To Be Continue --

Now, Some Unconfirmed Rumors

It was rumored that Japan was the largest civilization in the world ....

It was also rumored that GreyFox gave the Egyptian some Refrigeration technology to cause a war:

Yes, WAR!!! :hammer:

This was serious allegation towards the Emperor. The Chambers of Ministeres siezed this opportunity and demanded the Emperor to step-down. Helpless, Greyfox grudgingly agrees ....

Some Notes

- Have a caravel carrying a holy man for mission in French city:

- GP Farm should produce a Great Person next turn:

Hopefully, it will be a scientists to trigger another golden age. If it was another artist, then don't dismay, we will get another GE from Fussion.

In any case, after the GP is born, I suggest switching away from Pacifism to Free Religion. The GP Point will now be pushed to 1600, none of the other cities would be close enough. Plus we don't need another GP anyway.

Again, I suggest starting the next golden age at the start of the Engine

- The cities production:

Matsuyama is relieved of spaceship duties for now since it will take it 15 turns to build the Chamber, whereas Kyoto can finish the Docking Bay in 2 turns, and then the Chamber in 8. Suggest building the Life Support in Matsuyama When Ecology is finally learnt, that is, if Kyoto is still building the Engine.

- Research wise: Fission will be due in 3, suggest going for Fiber Optics (4 turns) -> Fussion (6 turns) to unlock the Engine. I know FO will obslete the Kremelin, but by then, we shouldn't have anything else to rush. We really need to unlock the Engine ASAP. By then, Kyoto should have completed the Bay and the Chamber, so it should build the Engine. With >100 hammers per turn (with Elevator), the Engine (1200) should be built in 10 turns.

- After Fussion, then go for Ecology (4 turns), and Matsuyama can start the Life Support. It should be built around the same time as the Engine.

Then, enjoy the Space Win movie! :D

Ok got it
thanks Grey for the Notes. They will help cuz this part of the game, I am not familliar with. In my games, AI or me are already dead by this time

Geez, not even time to trigger a golden age  and elevator already done. Should go smoothly provided no one else declares on Alex, then maybe, who knows ... :mischief: .

But on serious matters, have nice ideas for FOX 03 ? Can talk about it now right , don't think u ever have a chance of another turnset hein

And then, can someone explain please thing bridge saling thing. Guess this is humor but I don't get it. This is above my english limits, so why not learn from my fellow civers

Edit : turns played. Not much happened. I had 2 golden age turns after all and 1 turn of anarchy
Reporting tommorow

Greyfox. Excellent report. Always entertaining and setting a standard that is hard to match. I too am interested in what you next game is going to be. Going to be a bit of demand for places by the sound of it. :D

Ok, by popular demand, GreyFox announces:

Fox-03 - Trying to be Special

Basically this will be a training SG, where we learn to specialize cities. So it may be a bit dry (definitely not something crazy).

Variant is simple (to be discussed):
  • Every city built must either be designated a GP-Farm, Prod City, Gold City, or Science City.
  • Depending on its designation, the city can only build certain buildings

Difficulty will be Monarch.

For discussion, I am thinking of :

(1) Allow a 5th designation called hybrid. It can build anythg it want. The catch is for every Hybrid to be settled , there must be at least 2 non-hybrid cities.

(2) Instead of downright disallowing a Gold-city to build Barracks, the variant might be changed to if gold-related buildings are available, they must be built first before non-gold related buildings.

I am giving Fox-01 players a 24-hours headstart to sign up (with badger placed as alternate until he is back) before I officially post the thread.

Anyone has any interesting ideas to add to the variant?

-

Greyfox. That is exactly what I am looking for as I need so much to learn about specialising cities according the the surrounding geography. So this is a sign-up. Hopefully I can keep the :smoke: to a minimum with the difficulty at Monarch. I was thinking about staying aside to let some experienced players sign up, but I missed fox-02 and I won't get better by sitting and watching.

My other current SG as well as my current SP game is at monarch and it's teaching me that maybe I aren't as good as I had thought (or hoped) so you will need to make space for a few experienced members.

I like the variant idea of designating a city as one type as soon as it's built. I would guess that a bit of discussion and dot maps will go on to work this out before hand. Should we set a minimum ratio of each type before building more of any other type? Of course we would set only 1 GP city, but the rest we could work on a ratio of each type. Or we just let the geography rule us?

I like the idea of forcing each city type to concentrate on buildings of the same type before it can build any others. But should we allow granaries and lighthouses and exception to go in front of anything else as these can be essential to early growth and even libraries for that early research boost. A couple of topics for discussions for the group once you post it officially.

So as predicted, not much action theses turns. Nagoya, against odds, preferred a merchant to a scientist.

We can use him to trigger the GA and use the GE from fusion to rush some late wonder (just for fun) or use the merchant to make some money to upgrade units and use the great engineer for GA, more straegic yet I can see no backstabber around except Toku, euh but we are japan. Cyrus declared on Alex, but with this power I refrain from declaring.

Power graph is not very encouraging :

Islam has spread in Chartres, auto spread or Nappy doings. Our rmissionary in Rheims failed

Alex is having some casualties from war :

Went a bit mad on military. Especially air and naval units. We have learned fission and fiber optics and fusion is due in 4 turns. I haven't started cockpit, Osaka should be a good candidate for it. Osaka can afford a third enginneer, just abandon the sea tile with 1G2F. Stagnant is Okay

And, I almost forgot, Hatty completed UN and I voted for secretary FOX the first of course. Don't know the results yet, t'was last turn

Guess there are 2 turnsets left.

This is my signup for FOX 03 :D . I always tend to found cities first then think about specialization later. This way, I end up with a lot of "hybrid" cities. I think that this thread is a good one to have some hints about specialization :
A Guide to City Specialization and Land Improvements

GreyFox said:
Difficulty will be Monarch
Yep, some challenge. I won some monarch games, but am far from being consistent with it.

GreyFox said:

...
Depending on its designation, the city can only build certain buildings
Sure about those two quotes :) On monarch, I would call this absolutely crazy :crazyeye:
I would join Kikinit on designing some "hybrid" or "vital" buildings, that can be built anywhere. A market helps a lot with happiness, and is welcome in prod cities. Don't want them to go on strike during wartime right ?
Another alternative is to restrict non specialized buildings on those from previous eras, or 2 eras back. We won't have to worry about being able to build granaries and libs mid-game

World wonders sould be restricted to cities where they can enhance specialization.
For traits, I would avoid financial as it tends to influence specialization ratios (going mad about commerce/science cities)

Hmz specialization... Sounds good. Count me in too. Sounds rough having specialized cities to the max like that... Tho I am a price level player at best...

Nah.. there goes my movie :( Got it ... Playing...

Good turns, blid ...

yeah, cockpit ... I totally forget abt that piece! :crazyeye: Yes Osaka seems like a good idea.

I think the great merchant can be spent for gold ... we are virtually guaranteed of the GE from Fusion.

Hey guys, go to war! That's why I brided Hatty to start one, so that the later turns isn't so boring....

-

Turn 365 (1955 AD)
Pre-turn >>>

I find the game in a totaly different state then I expected it to be...
I for some reason started from this:
Matsuyama is relieved of spaceship duties for now since it will take it 15 turns to build the Chamber, whereas Kyoto can finish the Docking Bay in 2 turns, and then the Chamber in 8. Suggest building the Life Support in Matsuyama When Ecology is finally learnt, that is, if Kyoto is still building the Engine.

- After Fussion, then go for Ecology (4 turns), and Matsuyama can start the Life Support. It should be built around the same time as the Engine.

And then offcourse found that we allready have Fussion and the Chamber is due in in 5 turns. I MM kyoto a bit to hire 2 engineers, Down that to 4 but at the cost of -3FPT.

Tho I was thinking up front about a possible war, this throws me off my balance... and I forget all about it... My turns remain peacefull after all.

IT I am sure I made a screeny of the Election report... Aaargh its not here. Anyway we were elected President of the UN not unanomously but heck....
For some reason I lost my screenies pre-1961.

6) Turn 371 (1961 AD)
That same year... It seems we have some *Ahem*... competition

Note the workshops in red where towns used to be... Cockpit in 1 and Engine in 4.
Looking around we can now build Life Support. I go and look at Matsuyama... Hmz I can do no better than 7 turns. Osaka can do it in 5 + 1 for the Cockpit...
I max out hammers at Osaka starving hard... and will add yet more workshops (we need hammers not research)
Ah wait we have an engineer too.... Join that as a specialist.... Yes :D that puts me over the top down to 4 turns for the Life support module. Tho at the cost of 12 food per turn.... Cannot manage that for long... but try try....

3 turns on Life support
Hmz, I am not gonna make it...
Izumo begins: Scotland Yard
Yokohama begins: Recycling Center
Tech learned: Medicine
Nara finishes: Forbidden Palace
Nagoya grows: 20
Nagoya's borders expand

Turn 374 (1964 AD)
More bad news... Our competition is catching up it seems...

Again note the new workshops, but this time also note the food supply in Osaka... Empty  and Note the turns of the GA, just one more  just 1 turn short....
So because of the food situation I have to fire some of the specialists, and I come to this

Atleast I am able to retain the 2 turns for now.... but ... will it keep? because....

10) Turn 375 (1965 AD)
Well this conclude my official rain as leader of the Japanese people it was hell while it lasted....

Dispite losing the GA we remain 1 turn on the Life Support... so I turn up 1 turn short in my turnset :(, you can find the save here just one enter away from victory... With just a few things done differently like having a Coal plant in ... Oh never mind I forget... :mischief:

Food was bad ad first... but all rulling at the end...

Our production, tho I think we had a 'team' effort here as we did not have one major producer like Thebes...

And our GNP aka Gold department was well represented...
