Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special

Let's not patch until this one is done.

Done playing late yesterday, post tonight.

Let's not patch until this one is done.

Bede, are you referring to the entire SG or this round? Of the 5 SGs I'm in, two have members who have already patched. I have not patched yet. I'd rather no run two different versions of the game if I can avoid it.

I think its virtually impossible not to patch before ths game done. Players all over the SGs are patching like nobody's business ....

I personally won't be so patch-happy... The patch is barely out a day (people who just rushed the Kremelin would be in for a shock to find their shiny new wonder only two-third as effective as before).

Try not to patch until everybody has sounded in, ok? ... but looking at how patch-happy some players are, I suspect we will be forced to patched or drop out of other SGs ...

-

I'm frankly amazed at how patch-happy some of my teammates are. I'd like to wait until I have a good idea that it's not just a bunch of bugs. Then again, I have very few problems playing under 1.52.

In either case my vote is certainly not to wait until this SG is done. If this group decides to go that route, I'd probably be forced to drop out just to stay with all the others.

On the patch issue I have one game just started and a second in its last throes of diplomacy. I would lilke to at least finish the second one before patching (maybe three/four more turnsets total). The first game is nothing more than a wacky Bede variant and the patch won't hurt it at all.

So once the diplomatic game is done I'll have no real solid obection to patching, so maybe if everybody patches I'll just skip till it's over.

Now for something completely different (in 1.52 time)

Turn 80 (875 BC)
Tech learned: Priesthood start Polytheism
Berlin finishes: Granary

Turn 81 (850 BC)
Berlin begins: Settler for the southern peninsula
Munich finishes: Warrior

We have some trade options but since Alphabet remains a monopoly I hold off on them waiting for the break

850_00.jpg

850_01.jpg

Turn 82 (825 BC)

Move the warrior south into the trees and meet a neighbor

825_00.jpg

Munich begins: Warrior
Hamburg grows: 4

And the neighbor commits suicide
Warrior defeats (0.80/2): Barbarian Warrior

Turn 83 (800 BC)
Munich begins: Axeman

Kublai continues his poaching ways

800_001.jpg

I apply the whip to the Library to push his borders away from the rice.

Turn 84 (775 BC)
Hamburg finishes: Library
Contact made: French Empire. And Louis XIV appears from the eastern fog

750_01.jpg

750_00.jpg

And with the break in the Alphabet monopoly decide it's time to deal

750_02.jpg

Turn 85 (750 BC)
Tech learned: Polytheism
Tech learned: Iron Working and there is iron right next to Berlin.
Hamburg's borders expand
Munich grows: 5 and it hits its happiness limit so the Axe is whipped into shape.

Turn 86 (725 BC)

Turn 87 (700 BC)
Berlin finishes: Settler
Hamburg finishes: Granary
Munich finishes: Axeman

Turn 88 (675 BC)
Munich begins: Axeman
Berlin begins: Barracks
Hamburg begins: Barracks
Berlin grows: 4
Munich grows: 4
Munich finishes: Axeman with overflow from the axe whipped above and the hammers from the growth

Turn 89 (650 BC)

Turn 90 (625 BC)
Oracle built in a far away land
Cologne founded.
625_01.jpg

I built Cologne where it is to get the two gold and two food from the crabs plot right out of the box as we need the money to finish Code Of Laws. Ishould have good food and good hammers and decent gold output once the borders expand in a few turns. Cologne begins: Work Boat. Meanwhile chop the forest west of the worker to get the hammers in the boat. And when that one is done build another and send it sailing east

The run to CoL is a bit of a balancing act as gold is thin on the ground. I have had to sacrifice growth and hammers for gold to keep the bunsen burners burning brightly, We could use another scout to the east towards France and we might pick up some coin from villagers.

If we get Confucianism we will have fewer happy problems. If we don't we need Open Borders for a religion.

Since the Khan built his Old Sarai between Hamburg and Gepid I pulled the axeman back to stand sentry on the gold hill.

If we are feeling bodacious we can plant another settlement somewhere here

625_02.jpg

And we clearly need one here

625_03.jpg

Munich is working on a settler to pick up the hammers from the forest soon to fall to its NE.

Two more settlers and two more workers and then what?

Great, that puts me up. I think I'll back read the last few posts to make sure I understand everyone's intentions.

Regarding the patch: I've just learned that it's pretty easy to run both versions. For the sake of Bede's experience, I'm willing to run both until his other game is through.

At the very least, I'll play my next turns at 1.52.

Care to share how ot point us to where you've learnt?

Bede: nice turns getting those tech trades .... did you play 10 or 15? :crazyeye:

On Colonge: That's where I'm a bit puzzled. The soutern penisula can at least hold two cities, but with colone right in the middle, the spaces are used up and 3 hills goes to waste.

Roster:
-- GreyFox == On Deck with 1.52
-- Blid
-- Kikinit
-- namliaM
-- Bede == Played
-- rex_tyranus == UP

-- badgerpendous = alternate

I don't know where the original thread is, but one of my teammates in another SG quoted this (originally from some other thread):

3. Install the patch.

4. Run from one directory or the other to get the version you want. You'll also be able to install mods separately for the two versions, save games will be separate for the two versions, etc. The new version will have a clean install with no mods, which is probably what you want (since many old mods won't work).

Edit: Okay, I just followed the above instructions and am now dually-patched. If anyone wants help, I'll gladly give it. I will play my turns tomorrow under 1.52.

<?php echo "Rex, I hope you are playing!!!" ?>

I think we can go one more round of playing non-patched, seems like only Kikinit and namliam has patched. So for next round, I may reshuffle the order a bit to let non-patched players go first.

Those who do not have Civ4-1.52, please sound out.

I am running the two versions of the patch. (Thanks Rex for the tip ;) )

Off topic : anyone knows if the patch has fixed the anarchy exploit. It is not mentioned in the changes list

Game related, I see COL is a few turns away. Hopefully, we will get confucianism. Bede has mentioned a spot or two to settle. That is about short term.

Mid-term, I am thinkin' of :hammer: . We have an annoying and very rich neighbour :

GNP.jpg

This neighbour happens to be the most powerful too, the leader in score ....
Eventually he will be declaring on us. Now I am not trying to influence anyone :mischief:

I am askin for a favor too. If Alex makes some reasonable demand, give him tribute. We may need him if we decide to take down the bad guy. If we have confucianism, try to convert him. An aggressive ally is good. Just let him have something to chew so he don't turn into a backstabber

And finally, what about cologne designation : hybrid ?. BTW, I suspect there will be a lot of :whipped: there .

[rant]I currently have a personal vendetta against Mr. Kublai Khan. My last single player game, I was well on my way to a cultural win Kublai just refused to do any trade with me the whole game. Tokugawa attacked me and I managed to hold him back and then Kublai sent about 50 cavalry at me... Grrrr... I managed to get peace eventually with Tokugawa after getting about 3 cities from him and then got peace with Kublai about 50 turns later after losing about 3 cities to him. I then went back to my cultural pursuits and 20-30 turns later he came at me again. I had been building military the whole time, but still didn't have enough for him and he squashed me. Thus the vendetta... I will be happy if we go to war with him.[/rant]

On this game and patching, I for some reason decided to patch without really thinking about the consequences so now I may have to be skipped until you guys are ready to patch. Unless I can work out a way to go backwards.

Unless I can work out a way to go backwards.

Try renaming your "program files directory" and your "my games" directory to "Sid Meyer's Civilization 4 v1.61". Then install the game anew. Find and download the 1.52 patch (is it still available?). Don't do it through the game. When you run the 1.52 patch it will only patch your new install.

Then rename your new install "program files" and "my games" directories to "Sid Meyer's Civilization 4 v1.52". You'll have to add a start bar link to the 1.52 executable (and maybe re-link the 1.61 executable?)

I've not tried it, but the dual patch technique I quoted above suggests that this should work.

Thanks for the advice rex. I think I have the patch on my portable disk which is at work. I'll get it tomorrow and try your solution. Hopefully that will be the solution that will let me continue playing. Looking forward to your turnset. Hope the wife and in-laws hurry up and go shopping.

Why? There is no kinky prop used in Fox-03 ...

Abt the patching, its understandable that most people would like to apply it. So I cannot force players not to patch ... that's why I asked that those who patched sound out, and I'll put you guys last in the roster for next round. That'll give those who have not patched for one reason or another a chance to hold out for a few more days.

Not necessary to reinstall to get back to 1.52 (appreciate if you do so that we can hold on to 1.52 a while longer), but I think its easier to for those who had not patched to run two version rather than those who had pacthed.

Guys, I wanted to get the consensus on Cologne. I've attached an "improvement" guide for the city's fat cross. I counted food, production, and commerce as equal (1F is as valuable as 1P is as valuable as 1C). I then divided the city into tiles worth 6 cumulative value (red dot), 5 cumulative value (yellow dot), and 3 cumulative value (green dot).

No matter how we play it, it looks like food will always drive this city, especially early on. So that says either science or GP. Later on, when cottages grow, and if we added banks, markets, etc., a strong case can be made for financial.

Also, later, when lumbermills come in, we'll get a nice production kick if we keep the forests (currently, I see no reason to cut them). That production will support either choice.

So, before my turns, I need to designate this city. GP, science, financial, or hybrid?

Edit: I realized my compression made some of the image text illegible. Here's a better pic.

There is no river so GP is not my favourite. We already have 2 science cities. I'd rather go with a hybrid. Have a lib to hire some scientists (with all the food, we'll be hitting happiness limit quickly) and a barrack to rush some units when needed
