I don't quite get the "free market" civic. I was playing under the lowest economic level (don't remember the name) until I discovered economics, and switched to free market. They are both listed in the description of civics as "low upkeep." My cities gained extra trade routes, which is what the description says. In several cities, I gained an additional trade route worth +4 to +6 gold. Yet my overall income did not really increase. It went up by maybe 2 or 3 gold. What happened to all of the extra money?

Just tallying up the extra trade routes, my income should have jumped by at least 20 to 30 gold per turn at a minimum.
 
You don't get gold from trade routes- you get commerce. Unless you had Gold Rate at 100%, you would not get the gold you calculated.
 
Yes it was a bit confusing in the beginning that it was the slider that changed and not the money-sci output. This should be adjustable.
