Free tech or Wonder?

Carry on avoiding them. Chop-rush Stonehenge instead.

You know, it's strange. I'm utterly crushed on the Wonder front. I don't play industrious, and I've yet to start near enough to stone, marble, or copper to snag them before the opposition, but I don't think that's my problem. I'm usually so busy snagging territory and trying to keep up with the AI's addictive unit production without sacrificing my builder ideals of, y'know, actually *having* city improvements that I can't figure out when to start building a wonder. With or without chop. When I do attempt a wonder, it's almost always converted to cash.

I also tend to focus on tech lines that neatly dodge any wonder providing tech, although that's entirely unfamiliarity with the tech tree that I hope to grow out of.

And they always seem like they expire so soon, it's hard for me to get excited about them.

No, the culture and ability to build missionaries from that city remain, but the science bonus is made obsolete. So you might want to avoid Sci Method for a while, in order to get the most out of your monastaries. :)
I stand corrected. Many thanks :)

I also have a hard time getting hyped over Wonders. Sure, they're nifty, but while I'm building a Wonder, I'm also not building other things, like soldiers and settlers.

I also see all kinds of posts about how Wonders - especially the early ones - are virtually impossible to get on higher difficulties, and how even having everything in your favor only makes it a 50/50 coin flip. Since people are actually winning on those Wonders-are-impossible-to-get difficulties, I fail to see how Wonders are "critical" on the difficulties where they can be reliably built every game.

Personally, I feel that wonders are pretty well-balanced. Even the weakest Wonders are a big boost, but even the most powerful Wonders are nowhere near an "I Win" button ;)
