Free Willy dies

I knew they ate seals before, but I didn't know they dined on dolphins. If Ossric is right and Killer Whales are really in the same family as porpoises, then they are kinda canniballistic as well.

Wouldn't they only be cannilbalistic if they ate other killer whales?

And they eat seals too. So never go swimming in the open water with Orca's if you are wearing a scubba suit. :p

luckily, there has never been any case reported of an Orca attacking a human, while sharks do make that mistake every so often (and then sometimes find us to be tasty).

Orcas also fetch seals from the shore, there have been documented cases of an Orca mum showing her child onto dry land to get a seal baby, then helping the little one back to the water when it couldn't manage alone. They are extremely smar,t and actually, they should be diveded into several races, as these races differ not only in behaviour, but also in language!!!!!

many humans eat chims and gorrillas - cannibalistic? Humans also eat monekys and lemurs, and cows, and sheep, and frogs.... where do you draw the line?

I'd say, if you could mate then it is cannibalism ;)

Actually the name Killer whale is a artifact of time. The origonal name for these things is Whale Killers.

I happen to see Keiko when he was being nursed back to health here in Oregon at Newport on the coast.

I renew my bid to bury Willy in our stomacs. ;)

Really? I didn't think that was the case, but I could always be wrong.

I saw this National geographic special on killer whales and they eat porpoises. They had this one shot of a whale grabbing a porpoise, throwing it in the air, letting it struggle (it got bloody so I changed the channel. Yes i'm sensitive ;)), and then presumably ate it. I didn't know that Killer Whales ate porpoises before this!

well, they said on national geographic that they were the largest dolphin race, so i assume that they're right.

somewhat double post

Sharks almost never eat humans, they don't like the "meat". Usually they only bite and then they led go.

Yes, most. But when they taste enough blood and find that the prey doesn't defend itself and if they are Great Whites or one of the other kinds who care little what they eat...

rarely, though.

Hey, they are also eating Great White sharks.

Edit: Dear ISP, F*** YOU very much for the good service ! I think I've just invented a new kind of double post.

that is a VERY strange double post. with 21 minutes between the posts and a post in the middle.
Alex, i hope you're getting help for that problem.

as for the whale/dolphin named "free willy" i find it strange that anyone cares that he died.

The whale is called "Willy", "Free Willy" is the movie.

AT, I ahve actually seen these doubles before. never found out where they come from, but it seems from the bulletin version.

someone actually posted, then got warned for a previous post, then his second post showed up AFTER THAT and he almost got a ban for disobeying the mods - when in reality he hadn't had a warning when he posted

for many, he was a symbol of what we do wrong and how we SHOULD treeat whales, and setting him free was quite a boost for whale defenders!

well, i'm actually glad we got rid of him. There's something immoral/decadent about spending huges amounts of money on a single orca (which is not an endangered species) with the vast number of poor & starving people in the world in mind.

Oh that's just silly. You know full well that isn't the point. huge amounts of money will still be spent on outrageous, uneccessary things while others are neglected. The death of a celebrity whale does nothing to change the situation.

that's a very hash statement - consider the effetiveness of the 'advertisement' for grren groups and animal protectors - sure there is much nonsense there, but this was certainly a boost for the good ones, too. who care for e.g. keeping the genepool of wild animals alive etc.

well no, but i just felt that the hype about an orca was stupid. Just like there's now Nemo Mania. What's the fuss about? It's a whale, i guess that happens when people have to much time on their hands.
