What forum would be complete without a mention of <A HREF="http://www.freeciv.org">freeciv</A>, so here it is. Freeciv is open source, so it is free and the source code is available. Go play! You may also want to take a look at <A HREF="http://meta.freeciv.org">the currently running games listing</A>
While freeciv may not quite as good as SMAC IMO (yet), there is a good chance you will never try civ 2 again after having tried freeciv.
Freeciv has:
<UL>[*]build queues.
[*]better Fog of War than civ 2.
[*]is implemented as client-server, and so easily supports all kind of multiplayer and networked play.
[*]has MUCH better goto implementation, with airplanes automatically stopping in cities to refuel. Also, when giving the goto order you can see the route the unit is going to take marked on the map.
[*]Shared vision option in diplomacy.
[*]lots of other things I don't want to mention here.[/list]
Just a few gotchas:
<UL>[*]Ai players can't do diplomacy yet.
[*]We support almost all the major operating systems, but the game is a little flaky on bizarre OS'es like windows
