I just picked this up on GOG on its sale a couple of days ago. I first came across it about 1/2 years after its release. I subsequently tried (and failed) to buy a copy from various retailers. Unfortunately it seemed that no one had it and i suspect there were some distribution problems. I didnt try that hard and internet shopping was not what it now is. but i saw it on GOG and thought i would buy it as i enjoyed the demo back in the day. I have to say im mightily impressed so far. Im only a few training missions in, but the game is gigantic and incredibly well presented.

Did anyone have any similar issues to me in trying and failing to get the game about 10 years ago? It consistently makes top 100 games of all time lists, and many still consider it to be the best space sim to date. It just seems a shame that it perhaps doesnt get the recognition it deserved/s.

Im glad that websites like GOG make it possible for people to access material like this that would otherwise have faded into the ether.

Freespace 2 is one of the favorite games in my whole collection.
Luckily I got a FS1/FS2 bundle roughly 8 years back, haven't seen it ANYWHERE since that day. Ever.

For the time, combat and presentation was really epic and even the story was quite nice. Plus: A superb soundtrack!

And Bosch, oh Bosch - he was a quite refreshing antagonist at that time...
I really loved his monologues between missions...

A small hint:
The source code for FS2 has been released a while back and there is a fan-made HD remake out there.

...I can haz Freespace 3 plx?

Interesting. Ill certainly be checking that out then. What do you think about freespace 2 being one of the most underrated games? Critics and fans seemed to love it. But im convinced it suffered due to distribution problems and that the publisher didnt allow the developers to embellish the title once it had been released.

I guess the main problem was that it came out quite quickly after FS1. So many people probably thought: "Oh well, yet another Freespace", but the actual gameplay changes where really massive (shields, beam weapons, graphics engine). Even the Multiplayer was amazing, I had a blast to play CO-OP with my friends (althought the PvP missions also seemed awesome if you could organize a small squad).

Apart from that I have no idea why the game is below the radar of so many people. :(
