Freeze/Crash/Reboot

Reporting back again. Been playing for 2 hours again without a crash this time. Not sure which fix helped but one of them did seem to make it more stable. Lets hope it stays stable.

Have you tried the Civ IV demo? Does the same thing happen there? It's basically a smaller version of Civ IV. Does the problem seem better with tiny and duel maps? Maybe there's a correlation to the amount of video memory or AGP usage?

First I tried Civ4. thought maybe I was having troubles with the game so I downloaded the demo today and my whole system still crashes.
I have a Intel P4 CPU 2.67GHz, GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) video card
with 1GB of ram. It starts loading the game and when it reaches INIT MP/ VOICE it dies on me my computer totally reboots itself. whats up with that? (same thing happens with the full version of the game).

Reporting back again. Played another 2 hours without a crash. Not sure what stabilized it but thanks LuvMuffin and Neon!!!

Thamer I did as Neon and LuvMuffin suggested in this thread and it seems to have stabilized my system. Turn off fast writes, etc. Download the december runtime for directx. Great help thanks guys!!!

Raider,

I was wondering if you could post a new dxdiag please.

I noticed in your old diag some old dx.dll file dates from 2002 and was wondering if the ms dx9c updated em or not.

Thanks

Turning off every advanced option helped me run 1.09 with my old CRT monitor. But for some reason I'm back to crashes, since I switched to a Samsung TFT monitor. It MIGHT be because I run 1280x1024.

But then again: The game should be able to handle that as well as AA, filtering, Fastwrite etc.

Oh no that would be the tail wagging the doggie.

The game lets you use the features its up to your hardware to carry em out.

How is it that one of the best reviewed, most popular PC games is also the single buggiest piece of software I have ever run?

I've had this game for all of 2 days now.

I installed 1.52 directly after installing the game from CD.

My reward?

So far:

EDIT: make that...10 BSOD.
At least 10 crashes to desktop.
2 complete system freezes.

In case you don't feel like doing the math, thats 22 total crashes in two days of playing. 12 of which required HARD REBOOTING THE SYSTEM.

Oh, and pre-emptively...

eVGA Geforce 6800Ultra 256MB GDDR3 AGP
CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel
Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester 1GHz FSB Socket 939

How does Sid Meier sleep at night. Oh thats right. On a pile of money.

Thank you, but high resolution, AA and Ani settings are not a problem in any other program of mine. Currently I run Il-2, COD2, BF2 and GT Legends without any issues whatsoever.

Bad doggie. Bad!

I play CoD2 as well (one of my favorites). BF2 had a lot of bugs at release too, remember back then? *chuckles* Boy was everybody steaming until the first patch was released. I think CoD2 has so many fewer issues, because it is still a casle wolfenstein engine and people know a lot more about it. With Civ4, they went in a new direction, and sometimes being innovative also causes unforseen problems. I don't like CTD's, but the hanging gets me downright hostile. So far, the solutions presented seem to help so you might want to give them a try. If they do not work, please let us know too.

Give the december directx a shot (won't hurt at least), and let us know if that stabalized your system (for this game). I think we all look forward to future patches but right now the new patch is pretty cool. Most people have no problems, it's just us cool people who hang out on tech support forums. Heh heh. (*yes, if you read this, then by default you're cool too*)

And once you get the game running in the sweet spot, whoa! This game eats up so much of my recreation time now.
*Keep in mind that I barely know what I'm doing, and I shouldn't really dress myself. My advice should be taken for what it is, an effort to assist and not a knowledgable persons "fix".

Thanks, I'll give the December DirectX a spin. So far I tried every trick in the book (read: this forum) and then some. The game definitely was great, when I got it up and running more or less crash-free on my 1.09 CRT-setup.

Hey its worth's tinkering with while you wait for the next patch. Try those fixes in this thread. My machine was screwy until I applied that december Directx runtime and turned off those other options Neon suggested.

Civ still crashed on me, but only 1 time in 4 hours. Actually turned the game off for once without it crashing first!!!! WOOT !!! Civ rocks when it is working right, I think that is why there is so much frustration about it's problems. It's like having a ferrari but you cant get it to start so it just sits in the driveway. hahaha Thanks for the help guys I will keep posting in this thread with further details as they arise.

Anyone else tried these fixes yet?

Unbelievable.

Played for hours last night without a crash.

Then start it up today, and before I can even make it into a game, Civ IV crashes to desktop.

From the main menu.

@Neon Deon: Let's not do this. If you like to think, that there is no such thing as flawed programming, only flawed hardware, it's fine with me - in the spirit of new years eve, xmas season and all. :D But please allow me to prefer the believe that such a line of reasoning is absurd and defies logic. And let's put this to rest before it becomes a silly debate. :)

Phew, finally it works.

What I did was basically this:

1) turn off every advanced setting in the Nvidia controller (AA, filtering etc.)
2) download the December DirectX version.
3) turn all graphics to medium in the Civ 4 option menu.

Of these 3 I don't know which one did the trick or why it works. Fact is, it does. Now I could probably do some testing to narrow it down, but you know what? I gotta go backstab my friend Louis aka the Heathen French Pig. Poor fella shares my continent and has all the horsies.

Games still crashes for me, but at least it's on average every 2 hours so that is at least manageable. Still keeps me from online multiplayer though as crashing 2 hours in sucks big time.

Thamer, any word on what is causing this problem?Guess I will have to wait till next friggin year for an "official" fix. hahaha Jk :) Happy New Year!!!

PC is fine. All my drivers are updated. Windows is fully updated Sp2. I run ad-aware every day. Defragged a couple days ago. Run anti-virus 1 time a week....I am starting to just believe Civ 4 just needs some more fine tuning on the developers end.

I play lots of games on high detail with zero lag or problems. I know you don't accept that as mattering but when your Computer smokes the requirements and you have these kind of problems its not usually something the user can fix, it needs to be corrected at the Fire-axis end.
