Freezing

Okay. Left it for 10 mins and eventually a windw opened up and said ".... has enounted a problem and needs to close. blah blah blah." I was then given a option of sending a error report to microsoft or something. I sent the report and a web site poped up - Microsoft Online Crash Analysis. This is what it says:

"Error caused by NVIDIA® Corporation: No specific solution found

Problem Description

An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an unknown error occurred in nVidia Capture Driver. This software was created by NVIDIA® Corporation.

Problem Resolution

Microsoft has researched this problem with NVIDIA® Corporation, and they do not currently have a solution for the problem that you reported. Below is a list of recommendations to take that may help prevent the problem from recurring."

What do you think. I'm about to head off to work so I'll probably reply tomorrow.

Sounds like you need to upgrade your driver. What was the list of recommendations below the message?

If microsoft has no recommended fix then it could be a problem.

On the side of your box tell me everything in the graphics section.

Right click on your desktop and select properties. Go to the Settings tab and see what it says under Display. If it's something with nvidia, go to the nvidia link you put above and get the 78.01 drivers and install them (should be the latest version).

I don't really think that's the problem though... I'm not really sure to be honest.

@Meleager.

Graphics:

nVidia GeForce FX5500 3D AGP Graphics with 256MB DDR, TV-out port and DVI capabilities.

@Speedo.

I downloaded the lastest drivers and tried to install them but guess what, I got the same problem as I wrote above ".... has enounted a problem and needs to close. blah blah blah." You know the rest.

Just a quick little update. Out of curiousity I tried to open the system recovery program and guess what happens. Yeap that's right I get the problem again!

okay, this might be a viral problem. that is the most lkely explanation or have you already checked for that? if so then im stumped

He has norton installed which should take care of itself. But just incase could you (MattE) do a full system virus scan.

Otherwise I am stumped as well.

Viral problem. And that would be?... I presume a Virus, if so how can I check for it. Whenever I run a virus scan it says there's something but it cant do anything about it.

oh okay. Can you do a scan and take a screenshot of what it says. This could be it.

EDIT - what I really want to know is the name of the virus

You might not actually need to. Just make sure you give us the name of the virus. I think it should come up when it finds it rather then at the end but i might not be right. (never caught a virus with norten)

The virus name should be like worm.MeleagersBug. Hopefully you should be able to figure it out.

If you cant figure the name out take a screenshot of the virus details that will (hopefully) come up. Use the Print Screen Key on you keyboard, open paint, use control + v to paste it then save it as a jpg (NOT a BMP). You can then use the attach button when you make a post (if you don't know you have to click "go advanced")

Go to http://www.antivirus.com and look under the "Personal" button for their online virus scan.

Run their free scan, and remove anything it finds. Then run it again.

i talked to my dad and he says it can be, in rare instances a hardware problem. he had something like this at work. What happens is the reuest for the program gets denied but not sent back so the computer shuts itself in an endless cycle

That is one loooooooong virus check. Think his computer froze up again?

No it didn't freeze. I went up to get my hair cut.

I started a norton scan then thought what's the use norton does bugger all. So I just started a scan using the online one Speedo suggested.

It's been going for 17 mins now and is 19% complete. I'll get back to you blokes later about it. I'm trying to organise some more tickets to the Green Day concert.

wow that is slow. You should have done the norton since any virus that can do what this (maybe virus) is doing should show up in norton

did it tell you what the infection was?
