But left:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\npjpi150_04.dll

Seeing you werent sure I'll wait for a second opinion before removing those.

That might have fixed it. Have you tested your computer again?

I'm thinking now that it's not so much a virus as a fubar windows install. Or, it's possible (and likely) that a virus broke something that is still going to be broken after the virus itself is gone.

I would try a repair install, and after that I'm kind of out of ideas since I can't actually mess with the comp myself.

Dig out your windows CD and put it in the drive, then reboot.
At some point as it's booting up it should pause and say something like "press any key to boot from CD"- press a key
Windows setup should begin loading, and it'll take a few minutes for it to load everything. At the menu that will eventually load, take the option "press enter to set up windows now."
It'll do some more loading, then come to another menu. One of the options there should be something like "press R to repair this install of windows." Take that option.
After that just follow the instructions. I don't remember how much (if anything) will need to be reset or reinstalled after that finishes -assuming it works- since it's been years since I've had to use it.

If that doesn't work I would begin seriously contemplating just giving up and rebuilding the comp from scratch.

Why?

1. You may burn dozens more hours and never find the problem. Sometimes a rebuild is just faster and easier than beating your head against it trying to find the problem.
2. In my experience once a comp has been screwed up this badly, even if you get it fixed it never seems to be quite right again.

if I may interject.... I would reccomend going to a re install... now if your PC is a Compaq, (i think)theres a recovery disk with it. Not sure if that would do u any good. Sounds like you need a full wipe and re install. Big piece of advice, DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER. Use Mozilla @ mozilla.org, or Opera. Both are simialr to IE but 10000000000000000000 times more secure. IE is horrible. Allows so may pieces of spyware its NOT funny. The only thing I use it for is MS Office and Windows updates. And thats only because i have to. Make sure u have at least 2 anti spyware programs, ad aware and spybot should be ok. And also get AVG free. Never hurts to have more than 1 Virus program running. Best part is that all the programs I just mentioned, are FREE!!! YAY!! Good Luck

MS AntiSpyware is also a good tool, since it offers a real-time scan against spyware. It's currently free, though only a beta version. From what I've heard, the final version should be free for anyone with a legal copy of windows.

Speedo is right, stop trying to find the problem and burning more hours. Just reinstall windows, probably the best option now.

Right then, I'm screwed. This computer was originally my parents. When I moved out I bought it off them and took it with me and they bought an all new one. The prob is no one in our family is good with computers and when they originally bought this one it didn't come with a windows or recovery CD. It did come with a recovery program on the computer though. Unfortunately when I try to run the recovery program my computer freezes.

Hopefully I'm wrong about it not comming with a CD but I'm fairly certain it didn't.

Thanks anyway for your help everyone.

head to yer local PC shop... maybey they can fix it. Otherwise go buy Windows.... or Linux

Reinstall windows if you still have the install disks or otherwise go buy another copy of xp or something. Or... go get linux

Contact Compaq, HP, Dell or whoever made your computer and see if they can give/sell you replacement recovery disks for your comp. Even if you have to pay it should be considerably cheaper than getting a fresh copy of windows.
