Fun with Ottomans - Using the Barb Navy

I could be wrong but doesn't the Ottoman's UA also include 1/3 maintenance on naval units? This means that maintaining 3 naval units is the same as 1 for every other civ. So those barb ships aren't costing you that much.

Yes! That's why Ottoman's can have three times bigger fleet that another civs!

Navel armys are unstopable once they level up. Take range first then head to logistics nothing will touch them till flight. I have never gone as the ottomans but might after reading this. I normaly spam tirriems bulb to navigation and up grade. professional army makes this cheaper, infact the whole honer tree is a must for the quicker promotions. It takes alot of time to promote them but once they hit logistic YOU WILL SEE THE DAMAGE THEY CAN DO! 6 is the min requirment 8 is best

There must be something I'm not getting.

HOW EXACTLY DO YOU GET A BARBARIAN SHIP TO JOIN YOU?

I've now tried at least 20 times to just move one of my triremes right next to a barbarian galley - but nothing ever happens. Do I have to stay parked next to it or move away? I've tried both, anyway.

Can someone please explain exactly what I have to do, and what happens (and when exactly) when I do it?

You have to be next to it and kill it. try not killing the barb camp and let them keep spawning. Finish honer and upgrade to frigate for cheap

You have to KILL IT? Didn't someone else post the exact opposite earlier - i.e. move next to it, DON'T kill it?

So which one is it?

When I put one of my caravels on auto-explore, it somehow inadvertently converted a couple of galleys to my side... but how, I have no idea. I don't think it was by shooting at them though - auto-explore ships don't tend to do that, do they?

No, it's by pulling up next to them with a ship you own. If the barb ship doesn't convert, then THAT PARTICULAR SHIP will never convert to your side. I believe it's something like 50% chance that it will be converted, but the odds might actually be lower. But killing the ship WILL NOT convert it to your side, EVER.

I did too, first time I played as them. Took me three maps before I looked it up. It gets really frustrating not understanding how it works.

All right, that explains it - thanks!
I kept pulling up next to the same 2 or 3 ship about 20 times, and thinking "this can't be right".
So it's pull up, if it doesn't convert immediately sink it, and try again with the next ship?

Yes, it's right

After reading this thread i gave the Ottomans a try and my my my. I can't wait to start my next game with them again and make the most of the renaissance era!!

3 Janissaries, 3 canons , 4 sipahis + 1 General and my God, this is just an unstoppable force during the renaissance era. The Janissaries are awesome with that heal bonus on attack. I took over the continent i was on with a lot of fun along the way.

I have yet to try the corsairs :) -

I used two scientists to discover Gunpowder + the next one to get sipahis. So i had both at the same time and during the entire renaissance i conquered one after the other. Now that i have reached modern era and my units are obsolete, no more conquering, will work on a culture win with all the puppets i have ;)

Moral of the story, Ottomans are an offensive Civ for the renaissance era, make the most of it. I struggled to survive till gun powder but once i got there, nothing could stop me.

This was also good timing for this thread for me; as there's only 3 standard civs I've yet to play as; one of them being the Ottomans.

When Jannissaries are upgraded, they keep the heal bonus and the attack bonus. Having self-healing mech. inf rampaging around with blitz is... yikes.

Joncnunn, I would go for a coastal start with the Ottomans, and try to settle the next couple of towns coastal too.
Why? Those barb galleys can be damn useful for defense, if not much else, but as soon as you have an inland town that's the town the AI will target. So then you will need more land military all of a sudden, which negates the advantage of having those galleys.

And if your conversion of barb galleys goes fine, be prepared to have to disband some of them. They may be cheap in maintenance, but they still count as normal units towards your unit supply limit, and then a huge fleet can be a problem.
It's better to disband some - I think they do 12 gold if disbanded in your own territory - then to wait for the ability to upgrade to frigates, as that lasts so long.

You can also gift some of them to CSs to enhance relationship, especially if you pop them far away from home. Just remember that it only works twice for each CS.
