Funny or Weird names of places

First, to us croats Pula doesn`t realy sound funny or strange, and its name meaning a certain thing in other languages.. well, people from over there are officialy our country`s worst lovers

Second, yes, Krk is really strange, I think about that often (my wife`s grandparents live there, and some of my friends have houses there too)
I wonder if the town Krk is somehow connected to the Finnish town of Ii.
Maybe they should join up

Pula is a Finnish word as well, meaning trouble. :hmm:

Heh heh, thanks. I tried to keep a bit of a theme...! ;)

I've heard good things about Hell, Norway...

I used to pass through there quite often when I lived in Trondheim. It's a nothing place out near the airport -- it has a crossroads, a railway junction, some basic service functions and that's it.

It's a fairly large city for its size.

That made me raise my eyebrow...

There's a Batman in Turkey.

I remember the most looked up city name in my school atlas was Vicksburg. "Wichsen" in German, pronounced the same way as "Vicks[en]", means "wanking".

It was funny :D

Reminds me of "Torpenhow Hill", allegedly a hill in England whose name was similarly layered from Celtic "tor" 'hill', Celtic "pen" 'hill', older English "how(e)" 'hill' or 'burial mound', and modern English "hill".

My four hills beat your three rivers. ;)

Nop, Its only Celtic and English... Mine is Semithe, Arab and Spanish.

Just joking. That is fun too.

There is a village close to where I was born and its name is "venta de baños" It can be translated as "Bathrooms" on "sale or bathrooms inn' When I was a child, I used to ask if they sell bathrooms over there.

Well, then in certain situations that is a Swedish word meaning "trouble" :mischief:

There are some cities in Indiana that are named after what was made or mined there. The only two that I think of are Gas City and Cementville though.

It surely doesn't mean trouble in Romanian, but you might hear people in both countries shouting this word on the streets.
It is actualy spoken more often on stadiums. :D

Maybe it has uranium deposits?

I believe it was once a booming mining town, but I don't think it is anymore.

I believe Canada is the world's largest exporter of uranium.

Yes, I heard that Canada has lots of Uranium.

But no nukes, a valuable lesson there methinks :)
