G-III Lambda

Well I've had my first serious attempt today. It's been a game of highs and lows but I'm actually closer to Dave's date that I thought I might get. I'm currently 12 turns behind him as I enter the IA and given that I had a terrible time getting the last fews techs in the AA and no one got Engineering that's not too bad. I've also still got my GA which I can take next turn with an MoM build or convert it to Newton and wait a bit longer as I've got four turn research on Industry. However I got sanitation as my freebie so I'm really 16 turns behind now. Because of this I think that I'll try again from scratch. With a bit more luck in the AA I think that I might be able to get a lot closer.

I think that I'm going to enjoy this...

Using the Aztecs I've gotten down to 1040 AD (my personal best Launch), with more luck I think I can get sub-1000 AD; after a couple more tries I'll do some with the Russians. To be honest I'll be happy with any game that ends before 1000 AD.

The best part of Dave's game was in the modern game. I played games where I was almost able to keep up until the modern age, then he immidiatly got the internet which I never managed, thus losing lot's of turns. But will give it a go again for this challange.

Yes, it takes good planning to time that prebuild.
Where I usually struggle is to get much four turn research in the Middle Ages; reading over DaveMcW's and SirPleb's fast games they have their GA's in then but I've been saving mine for the IA. So there's someting else for me to try.

Planning for a prebuild I can do, but there is no 1000 shield pre-build, or does the palace cost that much by then? Haven't done it that often to try all kind of things. The guy who invent jobs

I had a pretty good game (early settler, SGL at philosophy, another at gunpowder I think) 2 turns from Chemistry at 1000 AD. The first picture is my empire and the 2nd is my problem.

Spoiler :
Fascism!!!???!! Fascism!!!!??!!?! Playoffs!!??!? What are you talking about Fascism?!?!?! (In the spirit of Super Bowl "week" who is this quote derived from?)

My strategy is pretty simple.

1) Research CB and Myst (hopefully for an SGL)
2) pop a settler in first 3-4 turns
3) build 6-8 scouts
4) try to find a couple or 3 AI and trade for Warrior Code which they usually research first
5) trade WC, Alphabet, and Masonry
6) pop huts before you finish Mysticism until you get writing, so that you can transition straight to philosophy as your next research; stop hut popping after you get writing or you will get free philosophy next.
7)pop every hut you see and try to find the rest of the AI
8) start Colossus and MoM early enough to get a golden age at 1200-1400 BC
9) grow population and science!

The palace may be 1000 shields by then - you can get it to that size. I don't remember the formula.

You get the internet by not building theory of evolution early - if you time it just right, you can get it in the first turn of MT, giving you as many as 7 free modern age techs!! (if you can get all 4 of the first level ones from the AI, plus your free one, which will hopefully not be recycling)

That's close! Are you maxed out for size? Anyway you will get 24 more beakers in the next 3 turns? If you gain 3 reasonably uncorrupt citizens next turn, that should cover it, no? 2 * 2 *2 (for lib/uni) = 8*3 = 36. Merge a couple of workers? if you can get industrialization in 4 - oh - electricity is more expensive - that sucks.

For a standard map you need 34 cities for a 1000-shield Palace

(From Theoden's article).

For the ToE; because I worry about these things I'll use a prebuild (eg. US) that stores excess shields, in case I get hit by pollution on the last turn, then I switch that in the big picture after the Era splash. After all the trading and choosing new techs, use the Big Picture again to switch the palace over to the internet. I dunno about yous, but I find it all a bit stressful. :crazyeye:

No I can squeeze out a few more beakers. And the next research corporation is much cheaper. The problem is the 2 turns ahead of Dave that I was have turned in to 2 turns behind due to getting fascism.

Would you abandon the start if you didn't get any SGLs from CB or Myst. ?

If the starting location is good, then I will wait until the MA to see if Ivan Pavlov comes to visit. If not then I will abandon it. In the Fascism game, I got an SGL at philosophy. I usually give away any gold from huts to the AI and then get it back by selling them a tech when I need cash; this way you can rush a library on the turn, and dont waste gold having a negative treasury. From looking at Sir Pleb's saves I think this is how he did it as well.

I tend not to take Nationalism before getting my free tech. Working on the assumption that each teach has an equal chance of being picked as the frebie, you have a 3 in 5 chance of getting an optional as a freebie without Nat but a 4 in 6 chance with it. Of course that may be a big assumption...

I've not had much luck in finding a good start where I can build the Colossus and MoM to get an early GA. The lack of a early MA is where I am falling down at the moment. I've been playing a game where I was 6 turns behind Dave going into the IA. I know that means that I can't catch him but I carried on to see if the infrastructure that I had was good enough to develop quickly enough in line with the rising tech costs but I'm losing interest so I may just start again.

I see what you are saying, 40% vs. 33% chance of something good could be a big difference.

It is very difficult to get both Colossus/MoM built in time. I generally leave the capital to build MoM, as I can grow it up to size and benefit from the effects to build a uni and the science wonders.

you know... the thing that frustrates me is getting writing by about 2800, then having to hold off on philosophy until I pop CoL, and have that not pop until 1500 and knowing that if I had just got CoL/Philo, I would be doing so much better!! Very frustrating...
