G-Major 37

i can't look at the civilopedia right now, but what are the special traits of the Impi and the Zulu UB?

Shaka is not organized so I am hesitating if I should get him... I think you can use any leader to win this gauntlet but there must be someone that will lead you with the best finish. In my last post, I am not telling that I can't do it with Persia (when I abandoned the game I am the tech leader and the power leader), it is just that I am seeing a game that I will not be proud of.

Impi - 2 move spearman with mobility (so only a jungle/forest hill can stop them moving 2), UB, barracks with -10% maintenance reduction.

EDIT: Since he is aggressive his barracks are half price too ;)

I know the thing about aggressive leaders...

Is the impi strength 4?

Hmm.. Zulu barracks, -10% maintenance, that sounds nice.

yep and 2 moves under any circumstances.
Not very good on quick though.

I think I'll try the financial creative guy...

so the impi looks useless. it will only be good for scouting purposes and on A.I. mounted units trying to pillage your improvements.

Willem? The Dutch UU is a naval one, are you planning to use a map with 2/more continents?

who cares about the UU? it's on quick, any UU is obsolete so fast it's not worth building it.

and terra may be easier to dominate, if you
- play without barbs
- try to get to astronomy first, then communism

yeah. good point. since it's on quick i'll just try and try any civ until I get a good one.

by the way, worker stealing at the start still works. No A.I. retaliation.

That's why I'm going to try Ottoman's and get gunpowder as quick as possible. Janissaries may have a bit of a lifetime then ;)

Impi's are great pillagers and medics.

terra... my mapfinder might crash if I use that. It's really really large right?

I normally use Pangaea.

already saw KC's 1000000+ win on immortal, terra. there is indeed a big empty continent. I'm wondering what will you get on those goody huts in that continent? Assuming you already got astronomy.

If you turn off barbs on Terra you can just send an explorer over to the New World in a caravel to pop the huts... so no Portugal required...

With barbs on, Portugal is probably the best bet on Terra though.

India sounds good. I'm pretty sure Rome will win this one though.

I am currently trying out justian, the basic idea is warrior rush someone(seems like i get an awful alot of stone in the cap with justian for some reason, so i usually settle on stone plains hill, work a plains forest hill, make 4 warriors and eat a neighbour), hopefully pop as many techs from huts as possible, build worker, grow, build worker, build settler, build henge, build worker/settler etc... build mids and just rex insanely fast... then take over the rest of the world with caprataches...

Winning huge/quick is pretty rough! Hmm...none of my early gambits worked so I tried a different game.

I won in 1934. I'm going to hang onto the saves...not sure if they'll be competitive but hell, it's my first gauntlet and this isn't gonna be super easy for anyone on quick ;).

Still...having to use TANKS? Hmmmmmmm.

Edit:

Agree on prats not necessarily being the answer here. The problem is that troops travel SO SLOWLY relative to tech. Everything takes longer - movement, healing, peace treaties, etc. Most obnoxious of all is the AI ability to produce more units as the war goes on relative to other speeds - fast wars are a priority here. At least the bonuses on Prince are pretty easy, but it's still not a walk in the park to try to go praetorians through a bunch of people. I know HOF disallows Inca by default but IMO they should be allowed for this just to laugh at people who try to actually use the UU (warrior rushes still work, but after that they tend to have metal) ;).

In my first attempt I put 18 civs in and I'm now not convinced that was a good idea. On that attempt I wound up fighting AIs with vassals, and the game seems a bit glitched in terms of those - AIs with vassals don't want to capitulate even if you're MURDERING them (taken 8 of 10 cities, 4x their combined power, for example). Putting 18 civs in meant putting in a couple civs with ibuildunitprob of 25. That may not have been the optimal metric regardless, maybe I should have selected AIs based on peaceweight, although honestly it's the stacks I don't want to deal with. Liz declared on me in that game and I killed a grand total of 1 chariot before taking peace.

Terra seems interesting but while you could get settlers over there REALLY fast with joao or even a plain astro bulb...in order to actually keep them you'd need state property after a couple (even with forbidden palace non-SP would be a bit rough). In theory you could colonize and just SPAM out settlers over there, but you'd have to conquer more on the homeland there.

I think I'll run another game and see if I can't beat 1934 :/.
