Gaelic district placement is a bit sketchy

As per title, its not easy to pull off. One or two districts are not an issue, but more than that... hm... I would’ve much peferred disincentiving placement near city centre as per Seowon, but allow doing it when needed.

Any good tips?

Offtopic: I’d trade 1 culture on mines for 1 food any day :)

I found it awkward too. Didn't realize the no speciality district in first ring rule will make it so hard.
 
I think my biggest issue with Gaul is that Oppidums turn out to be, at best, mediocre Industrial zones. So, while you're building those, other civs are building Campuses and look to get better Industrial zones shortly after you get your Oppidums up... and you're behind the curve.

Their placement is so finnicky that the Encampment bonus is, at best, rarely effective and requires someone to attack you. No Aqueduct/Dam/Canal adjacency bonus is... I don't even begin to understand this decision. A +6 Industrial zone is fairly common in my games and I have yet to get a +5 Oppidum.
 
The best I've come up so far is to space out cities really wide, with gaps 5 or even 6 hexes between, and to play tall rather than wide.
 
Agree with the above. Space out. I think that is the flavor of the civ.although tall is a trap in this game.use your production to settle as much as possible


The lack of juicy adjacent bonus i can live without. The Opp is great because its cheap and early. Going production crazy with this civ feels really good. Talking about churning out same era wonders in like 5 turns . that's got be great in its own way right? In that case plop your districts wherever they fit and move on. Your Gaul after all, not Rome.
 
I haven't found this to be a major issue for me yet, unless I'm stuck with coastal cities. Gallic coastal cities really suck but I've been able to get 4 districts in place in any other city I want without too much difficulty.

I also quite like the oppidum. It maxes out much lower than a normal IZ or a Hansa, but it's so early. You only build it in specific cities anyways.

I haven't been playing particularly taller with Gaul than other civs. I sometimes space the cities out a bit more, just to make sure the good spot for a campus or IZ isn't gone, but otherwise, it feels roughly the same sort of city spamming as with most other civs. It's certainly no Maya.
 
It's horse of a different color, and very dependent on having good Hill arrangements. I find that you can't always place the city center in an optimal spot for fresh water and still get good district placement, so I may have to rely on aqueducts (which I rarely ever build otherwise).

You just tipped yourself one of the best ones.
Theaters in ring 2, wonders in ring1, entertainment join the theaters. Tight placement for CV. Far cities take longer to settle, every turn counts
For others I would take @Bibor s tip and hunt out +3’s for campus in smaller clusters.
That government building and trees become more important, roll on lumber mills
 
I'd only trade culture for food because Gaul gets so much culture from unit production.

But then (I haven't played a Gaul game to completion yet) wouldn't Gaul's mines, as is, generate tourism at Flight?

I haven't played a Gaul late game, but I searched in assets for PrereqTech="TECH_FLIGHT", mines don't have it.

On the contrary, the lines for pastures are like this:

which is saying they get tourism from culture after flight (that's why even if it's from St. Basil, you still get tourism).
 
Gaul mines don't generate tourism from flight. I played a peaceful science victory with them and I didn't see any increase in tourism on researching flight.
 
The culture from mines is great, but starts with gaul can be really food starved, at least from my observation. Getting to pop 10 is not that easy in hilltopia.

My one Gaul game to completion so far, I built Temple of Artemis in the capital, which helped a ton. It's not too hard to get given Gaul's strong early production, and it let me not worry too much about food in that city while I worked to grow the secondary and tertiary cities.
 
Magnus marsh/food bonus chops were my main solution to this. I think prioritizing a couple of food chops in each of your core cities is pretty important. Temple of Artemis is really nice as well but requires a camp resource and I haven't always found one in my capital. Hanging Gardens has been more reliable to get but I'm not sure the effect is worth it. The other things that helped were internal trade routes but those tend to not do enough without food chops.
