And ranked 4th amongst all games!

Great to see the praise, well deserved, that GCII, and Stardock, are receiving from the gaming community.

Methinks the reports of the death of TBS may have been a bit premature..

It's a revival I think. The decline happened when graphics was on the rise. It provided a new level of immersion, one which tbs games could not so easily manage at the time.

I think the genre has been able to catch up now, providing sharp functional graphics which once again, help immerse you into the games.

Rubbish. The reason TBS has always been years behind RTS (and other, more 'action' oriented games) is simply because TBS creators have focused their efforts elsewhere, and because hardcore gamers have never stopped bleating on about how they don't care about graphics.

TBS has always had the very least excuse for having bad graphics because, except during intensive A.I. routines, the game essentially has nothing to do except render the scene. In a TBS game during the human player's turn, the game merely has to render the scene and process the user input. That's nothing compared to the tasks a FPS or RTS has to do - something like an AoE game must render the scene in real time, alongside (what passes for) A.I., alongside user input alongside physics etc etc.

Civ4 and GC2 might look pretty compared to their predecessors, but they're still graphically years behind 'action' type games.

But wait guys, don't you remember? Nobody plays turn based strategy games.

We need to have them all be real time. Oh, and they should mainly focus on multiplayer.

Civ IV dominates sales charts, wins tons of awards. And now GalCiv II comes out and also seems to be getting a lot of interest.

I think the market has spoken - turn based strategy games are alive and well.

It's good and bad. Good because I'll have games to play. Bad because I'll have games to buy and less cabbage. ;)

Maybe people are getting sick of clickfests and eye candy and tired of upgrading their system for each new Uber game. And to me each RTS is essentially the same.

Yes I agree with this, some RTS are good but most are just cheap copycats of other RTS games. I really enjoy the depth of a TBS game which is pretty much impossible to put in an RTS game.
