This is a game from Stardock, a company that's more specialised in Windows skinning programs (windowblinds, objectbar, etc...)
I have tried it, nice though.
The game looks great but the developers seem to have A.R.D.S. (Australian Release Date Syndrome), which causes game develpers to forget Australia exists until about a year after American release date.

Is it not avilable for download in Australia, Elden? I know that the distribution in the States is still a little slow, so I just downloaded my copy. Not knowing enough about copyright and distribution - - I assumed everyone anywere could download it - but thwt might not be the case.

You can download in Australia, but you must give your credit card number over the internet. Theres no way I can do that even if this is the best game ever.

Ah, but Stardock started off by making games and skinning programms for OS/2 so they have been making games for many years now.
@Elden: Giving your credit card out over the internet is plenty secure now-a-days. Check to make sure your browser has the little lock symbol on it and you can show with confidence that you are almost 100% protect. Also, checkwith your credit card company and find out what liability there is for shopping on line - check cards (also called debit cards that have Visa/Master Card capabilities) are not reccomened for use, but I use mine frequently . *crosses fingers*
Also...maybe a silly question, but how easy is this game to minimize and maximize in Windows? Reason I ask is I want something I can play at work and can hide quickly if someone comes in my office.
Way easier on the Min/Max than CivIII. I usually keep my desktop at 1280x1024 and when Civ Starts it of course changes my desktop to 800x600 (or maybe even 640x480???) so when I alt-tab, it then leaves me looking at this giant version of my desktop. GalCiv Alt-Tabs into my normal desktop resolution. I also think you can window it - but haven't tried yet (reason I say this is that I saw it windows once on my screen, but I don't know how it got like that).
BTW, don't play at work - there are too many people out there looking for jobs right now, if you get caught it would be too easy to find a replacement. Sacrifice sleep, not work or family.
@ Oddible: I know when you start the game from the desktop icon it brings up a windowed flash screen and then you click Start Game and it goes full screen. If I could run this game windowed I would be in heaven!
BTW: I purchased the retail game from GameStop for 39.99 with free shipping. Should be here any day now!

Stardock has a non-supported Windowed mod of this game. It is available via the download utility you get with the game to use for updates and obtaining free goodies!
GalCiv really rocks! Picked it up today and after finishing a whole game on a tiny map, I can say it is a pretty good competition for Civ. The thing I like most about it is the awesome AI and the great diplomacy system, probably the only two things Civ is short of. It's also a lot easier on the 'alt-tab' than Civ3, but nothing close to Civ2, which is the ultimate "Play at work" game.
Anyway, get this game, it has the features that Civ is missing, I wish there could be a combination of the two or something...
I've been playing now for about a week now and am very impressed by the AI. The game models the grand view of things pretty well. Even though it's design is more macroscopic than microscopic there are plenty of things to consider to keep an emperor busy!
One thing that many 4x space players might miss is ship design. You are limited to using ships that are "unlocked" when you discover certain techs. It's not that bad really when you consider that the game is meant to be concerned only with the big picture and not all the nitty gritty details like ship design. A leader of a space civilization has other things to worry about. If you treat the game like that you'll love it.
hmm, i seem to be having problems with downloading the patch for some reason...
Can anyone be bothered with sending it to me please? I would be very grateful.
