Every time I start Civ 5 the launcher opens and I have tried selecting Dx 9, 11 and the Win 8 touch screen option and the launcher simply crashes. No opening video, no screen, just crashes without a message, the .exe appears for less than a second then disappears. I have tried re installing DirectX, Verifying the game cache, checked my drivers, uninstalled all mods, deleting all of my Civ 5 files manually then re-installing the game, checked/unchecked compatibility mode, re-installed Steam, and some other minor tweaks as well and to no avail. The last time Civ worked fine was 2-3 weeks ago and everything had worked except some bugs with the units (Specifically Workers) not moving an the end turn button not working.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, thanks.

Is this issue limited to Civ V? How about other Steam titles? Non-Steam? Non-games?

I don't have any issues running Civ V on Windows 8, though my system is overkill and I've yet to delve into mods. I always choose DX11.

I got a new laptop a week ago with Windows 8 and non-touch screen. I was totally frustrated trying to get Civ 5 running. Every time I ran it, the game would crash so bad the OS had to restart. I was able to see the opening video to its conclusion but then nothing else.

I tried all kinds of things to getting it working including various Windows compatibility modes and too many other things to mention here.

I have a 2 video card laptop which is not that unusual these days. Intel Graphics HD 4000 and an AMD Radeon 7730m. I kept thinking the Radeon was to blame but I had the most current driver for it.

Finally, giving it one last shot, I looked for an updated driver to the Intel HD 4000.

And found it online!

After installing it I'm now able to run the game. Select Windows 8 mode even if you have non-touch (like me) and you should be good to go.

One thing I have noticed is that I have to use 'move' mode to tell units where to go. And also have to drag the map rather than just moving the cursor around to move it.

Really hope this helps somebody!
