OK. so heres the deal. I'll be playing my game all fine and dandy, the year 2050 comes along, it says i suffer an embarassing defeat (not that good at the game yet) but then instead of going to the scores and ranking screens, it just says it can't find "/text/pediaicons.txt SHAPP_RACE_BARBARIANS"
and then it goes to desktop.

I WOULD like to play the game beyond 2050 AD. but it just crashes.

any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

BTW,

I am running Civ3 barebones. no mods, extra scenarios, units etc. i bought it from Superstore for 10$ and it came as version 1.29f.

Comp specs:

AMD athlon 64bit 3000+
512 DDR RAM
160 gig hard drive
egeforce 4000mx 64 megs
soundblaster live (cheap 60$ version)
win XP home w/ SP2

Try reinstalling it, it sounds like during the installation missed a file.

PS: When you reinstall, backup your saves just in case. It should keep them, but if not, better safe than sorry.

thanks, but i did that 2x already.

didn't help any.

However, i just ran another game without barbarians. and it continued fine after 2050AD since i didn't put barbarians in.

but honestly.. i STILL want to know why having barbarians in my game caused it to crash at the end.

I think it might have been because at that screen where all the other civ leaders are telling you off, there isn't an actual face or smart a$$ comments for them to make. i dunno..

Open "pediaicons.txt" in C:\Program\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Text\,
press CTRL+F and search for "SHAPP_RACE_BARBARIANS".
There shouldn't be such a string there, but if there is, that might be the problem.

The game is apparently trying to look for "Small Happy Icons" for the Barbarians.
Did you mod your game recently?

nah
like before, i haven't modded civ at all.

its working fine now. my guess is that some barbarians took over a town and instead of razing it, they actually took over it and started another Civ

my guess is since there are probably no icons for barbarians, the game would get its panties in a bunch and crash when it would try to display the barbarian portrait and profile.

so everything runs fine, so long as i don't include barbarians in my game.

I don't think that's possible. In over three years and two expansions, I've never ever ever seen barbs capture a civ and create a 'mini civ'. Now, this was possible in Civ2, maybe even Civ1, but not, AFAIK, Civ3.

well i've seen it happen once in Civ1 for Snes. so i don't seen why its such an impossibility. Plus, during negotiations (i think with aztecs) they would ask if i wanted to make contact with the barbarians, which i thought was kinda odd. considering they weren't even a real race. but hey, with the shoddy programming of this game. i figure anything can happen.

It's an impossibility because Civ3 is not coded to allow that to happen.

Just because it was possible in a previous version doesn't mean it's implemented in the current one. Another good example of this is taking the enemy's capital. In Civ2 that used to cause a civil war and the one country would split into two. This isn't a feature of Civ3. Tech stealing when capturing a city is another feature implemented in previous versions, but not in Civ3.

ok.

so we know whats not causing the crash.

what is?

PLEASE remember that i DID NOT mod my retail civ 3 in any manner. it runs "vanilla" as you people say.
