I'm setting up a new PC at home and installed Civ 4. Everything appeared to be fine until I went to run it. I get the "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application" message. It does this with *both* CDs. Upgrading to 1.52 didn't make any difference. Anyone have ideas on what might be wrong?

I installed it just fine on my other computer. The only difference with the new one is it uses PCI Express and has an AMD X2 in it.

try closing all running apps
to do this click start, run, type msconfig, click on startup and disable all. click apply and close and restart. Then try again

If it still dont work right click on the shortcut and choose propities, then compatibility and make sure the box isn't ticked for run in compatibility mode.
If it wasn't already try ticking it and choose windows nt.then try again

If it still doesn't work update the firmware for the drive

good luck!!

Thanks for responding! As it turns out I've already tried all those things. It's a pretty clean system since I did a format and fresh install. The firmware on the DVD drive was already at the most recent version unfortunately so nothing I could do there. The only thing I haven't done that I can think of is to try another DVD drive to see if that has something to do with it. I also sent an email to 2KGames but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

If anyone has any other ideas for things to try I'd love to hear them. I'm hesitant to try a no CD hack but if worse comes to worse I may not have a choice. It's unfortunate that the software piraters out there force the game companies to put in these copy protection measures which sometimes screw those of us who are legitimate paying customers. :(

Sounds like your CD/DVD drive may be bad. Mine did that not too long ago, then I noticed other problems with other games, etc. I even tried throwing a movie in, with basically the same results.

You might try looking at the driver. Brand new PCs are usually far from up to date. LOL I know, ridiculous, huh? You might also try uninstalling the device from device manager and let Windows rediscover it by restarting your machine.

You should be able to check the version of your CD/DVD driver by going to the manufacturers web site or just use the Microsoft driver for it. CD/DVD drives are always generic enough where you don't need a particular device driver from the manufacturer to make it work.

If that doesn't work, post your system specs, as that may help figure it out.

I *bought* Civ4 yesterday and have spent hours trying to get past this problem. I've tried both CD's, reinstalls, DMA and PIO settings, removing DVD software, multiple reboots, etc.

What is so frustrating is if I had pirated the software (the wrong/illegal thing to do), I would be playing it now instead of troubleshooting a legal copy and wasting $50. :(
