I know I can ask this elsewhere, but I rarely use the other forums, my questions arise from a *otm, and believe many of the top players are right here. So, since I'm not someone who can read code and decipher things myself, I'll ask here hoping someone who can answer will be so kind...

So, can someone give insight on getting techs when suing for peace?

Obviously you have to be stronger militarily, but it seems you also have to have captured a city, and the war has to be longer in duration than just when they'll talk again. Additionally, there seems to be some tipping point where they won't give you anything... usually when they have no hope of recovery.

Can someone add to this and explain how the AI code actually works? Thanks in advance...

Mastiff, it's connected to how much damage you have done to the AI. The more units you kill and the more cities you capture, the more valuable things the AI will be willing to trade for peace. I'm not sure about the exact details though.

Very interesting. I wonder... can this effect be seen immediately after destroying some of the AI's units or does one have to wait for a "big event" to occur, such as the capture of a city or the end of a turn in order for the trade offer to increase?

Also, would you think that losing more of your own units in a battle would reduce the value of what the AI would be willing to give to you? i.e. Is it more of a ratio of success in battle, or can I throw away a lot of suicidal units in hopes of killing a small fraction more of the AI's units, just to get them to barter a little better?

I think Erkon is right. I have seen (in BTS at least) that if I check what the AI is willing to give me for peace just before attacking that last 0.2 strength longbowman in his city & then after dispatching him to Valhalla, the AI ups the ante.

Which is totally backwards if you think of it, ideally the AI would recognize that it is almost 100% certain to lose MUCH more than it is offering me before I initiate that last combat, and afterwards the threats from my forces have decreased greatly in imminence ...

But the long term ability of the AI to resist is reducded with the loss of a city and its defenders. Maybe the AI is running off of the power/soldiers calculations ... and how the two sides relate on that?
