Gamespy servers closing, no comment from 2K

Gamestop is nearly bankrupt and leaving the game business.

Whether this is true, false, probable, or possible...it is purely a deflection that has nothing to do with the point at hand.

Steam is not the 'best' DRM available. No matter how many times you say 'Steam is better than SecuROM' and try to pretend those are the only choices you will not make it so.

Apparently when 'Strawman strawman!' doesn't carry the day you try for the 'move on and ignore the point' approach. Let me guess, econ 101 was scheduled the same time as Intro to Logic and you couldn't take both.

Have to throw this in just in case anyone was concerned about the latest randomly spewed assertion...which I assume is founded in 'they compete with Steam so they are inherently bad and should be put down at any opportunity' (I think that is in the Sycophant Fans Handbook recently published by VALVe)...

GameStop's earnings for the holiday quarter were up 18% over last year. If they are 'nearly bankrupt' and trying to get there they are apparently going the wrong way.

Gamestop is exiting the game business: http://time.com/77098/gamestop-signals-major-retail-transition-says-itll-close-120-130-stores/

Debating with you is hardly even fun.

Here's a quote from the article about GameStop closing stores that you yourself provided:

"130 stores is a drop in a very large bucket — one that comprises 6,457 GameStop stores in all worldwide. Closing 130 amounts to just 2 percent of that number..."

Do you read anything other than Steam PR and your own posts? At least the articles you link would be a good start.

I have three GameStop stores within one mile...if two of them are among the stores chosen for closing I will be neither surprised nor particularly concerned for their corporate future. Truth be told I can't figure out why they are all there in the first place.

You are comparing Steam to an idealized world without DRM. This idealized world has never existed.

Oh yes, it has. BTS patch 3.19 or Civ Col patch 1.1 removes copy protection. The final US version of Civ IV Complete also has no DRM or copy protection whatsoever. For Civ III there are official (Firaxis) NoCD patches. Civ II was released with no copy protection at all in a time where online DRM was still science fiction. Civ I had a manual request but otherwise disks free of any copy protection. In manuals of those times companies usually explicitely recommended to make back-up copies of game disks. So this idealized world you deny has been around for 25+ years and the Civ series trived in it.
