Gary's Poser Unit Creation Thread and Workshop

If you're up to it, Wolf_66 maybe you could put together a list matching up the units above with whatever weapons, clothing and colors or camo schemes you would like with them. It's up to you if you have the time and desire. Feel free to add any new units not listed as well. :)

well, this is more or less the secret dream of any civ modder! :crazyeye:
Thanks for your willingness and your confidence. I'll do my best but please do not take me as your ONLY reference... Even if I honestly think to know this subject reasonably well, for sure other guys around know it even better... last but not least you should also hear El Justo opinion

I think I will be able to post a useful list in a couple of days.

If you want to confer with El Justo regarding the list that would probably be a good idea. Also I added a few more color schemes to the list of animations a few posts back.

I've created a DShK heavy machine gun using Wings3D. I may give it a try to create a North Vietnamese Heavy Machine gun team one of these days.

Gary,
here is a possible list including all foot units in TVW Scenario plus few additions that might be useful for completeness.
I tried to include only units making sense in this scenario model, so do not look for accurate breakdown to different combat and combat support units.
From your point of view, the hard job is differentiating very similar units, e.g. units within the same service such as different US Army units. Apart from few variations in weapons, flak vests and hat/helmet suggested in attacked list, you could try to get this by using different combinations of rucksack, armbands and accoutrements to carry ammo/grenades.

Also attached few more pics.

I hope this may help.

Perfect! This should keep me busy for a while. Thanks for putting together this list. :)

BTW: My first Vietnam uniforms book came in Friday. It's the Osprey Men at Arms series for South Vietnam. I recognize some of your pics from it. Also I see a couple pics from a book called "Modern Military Uniforms" which I also have. These will certainly help me as well.

I forgot to mention I PMed El Justo and I'm waiting for his reply.
I would say that any unit you would decide to release will be appreciated by civ community but, speaking about a remake of TVW, we should respect any decision from his side. That is his scenario, not mine ;)

EDIT:
I got EJ Reply. He basically agrees about above list, so any unit you would like to release would be welcomed.

Even if EJ decides not to update his scenario that doesn't mean there couldn't be a fan created update, with his approval of course. :)

OK. I notice there are a few different "greens" associated with various units in the spreadsheet.

I've compiled some samples using different shades of green for public scrutiny.

The different greens appear to be:

1. US Army
2. US Marines
3. ARVN

I'm wondering which of the samples below to associate with which nationalities/branches.

See the following post for previews...

Basically the first image on a row is a lighter version, the second next to it in the same row is a slightly darkened version and each row represents a different shade of green. I'm trying to pick out at least three different shades that would be reasonably distinguishable in game from each other.

thanks for your effort. I guess this will end up in top quality units.
About shades of green you proposed I would say:

1st row US Army
2nd row ARVN
3rd row USMC

all of three with dark color, i.e. the one in right column.

I darkened the first row green a little more. I think it makes the first row a little more distinguishable from the third. Here is the even darker shade of the 1st along side the previously posted 2nd and 3rd row darker shades.

these are awesome, bro. very nice work. tied up atm w/ work for my AoI scenario. but like i mentioned before, in time i'll get to the vietnam folders. no doubt there's needed units. so very nice on the impending additions.

agreed on the color schemes. but note that the tropical sun often faded some of those greens. now, not saying the colors aren't accurate above. but sunshine can really fade certain colors.

I made a few adjustments to the colors. These should be more distinguishable at Civ scale. The tiger stripes are basically improvised as I don't have proper tiger stripes. However, this pattern looks pretty good IMO at Civ scale to pass for tiger stripes. I noticed in the Osprey book on the ARVN, the early infantry wear a cap instead of helmet. So I'm wondering if a cap wouldn't be more appropriate, while at the same time giving the unit something additional to distinguish it from later ARVN infantry.

US Marines; US Army; ARVN; Tiger Stripes

The only problem with fading colors is that the more fading is applied the less distinguishable one color green will be from another. As you can tell in my post with the light colors on the left side, the animations on the left are very difficult to tell one color from the other. :(

Gary, I am dead serious here. If these units don't have civcolor, I will find out where you live, drive to your house, pick the lock on the front door, go into your kitchen, and eat all the food you have. I will. I did it to CivArmy before I threw him out of the back on an airplane.

Spoiler :
Just kidding, of course. But seriously though, civ color. Doesn't have to be huge. Maybe just say, a belt, or a bag of some kind. But please. Civ Color.
Spoiler :
I did throw CivArmy out the back of an airplane, though.

LOL!

I'll see what I can do as far as time allows.

Gary
your last preview looks very good and I think you are right about problem in fading unit colors.
I've just two small remarks ans one question

R1) ARVN color looks a bit too...yellow but I undestand the need make this shade of green clearly distinguishable from others
R2) maybe you could also differentiate helmet camo using darker or lighter versions to better suit uniform color. That would also help differentiating units as helmet is a clearly visible part of the unit.

Q)Il looks ARVN soldier has no helmet. Am I right? If you revert to helmet, at least for basic infantry unit, you should use solid color, not camo, to add further differentiation.

Anyway your soldiers look really awesome. Tiger strips are so cool...

The ARVN guy is wearing a cap. I looked in the Osprey book and the two pics of early ARVN infantry show the men in caps instead of helmets. I was thinking perhaps a cap would be a good way to differentiate between units.
