Gator02 - Learning to Walk

The issue with the French is going to be the wide front of the old Azteca lands. The little Corporal has a ton of troops in Boston, for example, and we are spread pretty thin for covering garrisons in most places.

My tactical advisor keeps telling me to reduce the risks in the west of France before attacking into Paris, but making Paris an early objective is strategically sound. Hitting Nappy hard in the west would pull his forces in that direction, and out of is central region, making the attack on Paris both less costly and more likely to succeed.

The fleet going at Paris will definitely need Frigate support. If the city defenses are well softened before a landing is made my experience has been that defenders seem less willing to leave the capitol to chew up the landing force.

We are going to need every galleon full before even thinking of making a landing at Paris.

By starting in the west and keeping the Eastern Expeditionary force out of sight of any French boats or towns on the way in we will increase the chances of a successful landing. So use the Frigates to scout the waters around the fleet and hope to catch and sink any French caravels before the landing fleet can be spotted.

We don't need to declare until our fleet is in International Waters just outside the French border near Paris, do we? :mischief: Then we need to protect the fleet for the turn of the landing? So knowing where the French Caravels are is important. Hopefully, they'll be exploring Mali... ;)

I am feeling so sick (flu probably) that I don't think I will play this evening guys. I will try to play tomorrow if I feel better, but if one of you would like to take my turn that would be fine.

Best wishes for a quick recovery!

No rush Brad, I'm having to work most of the weekend so my play time will be limited. My boss' son is in the hospital.

Hi guys,

Brad has asked me to let you know that he is still sicker than a dog......

He is trying to get well enough to finish his turns, but I think it still may be later tonight or tomorrow before he can do it.

Nursing and meds are being administered!

Hopefully he will be updating you himself soon.

Thanks

@Nichelle - Thank you for the update. :thanx:

I think we are more concerned about Brad getting better so please ask him not to worry about getting the turns finished. We can wait a while, besides, where would we be without him?

No rush on my part. I probably can't play until Friday night.

BTW, I'll be enjoying a Spring Break in Conneticut. Visiting my brother and his family. I'll have some computer access but no Civ access. We'll be gone from April 7th until the 17th.

My boss was back at work yesterday, so today things finally started getting back to normal. I have some time to play Saturday but I think Brad has already started his set. So I think we might wait alittle while longer, see if he posts something this weekend.

While we're waiting I was wondering if we wanted to take one of the earlier saves and play some turns using a different strategy. For example if we go back to before we started the war (or the major war gearing up period) and played some with a goal of trying for diplo. Then we can make some comparisons about how the middle part of the game differed in commerce, research or military approaches. We don't necessarily need to finish this alternate game but we might learn something new.

@Bez - do you want to launch us down this side road.

Diplo probably wouldn't work, but space would be a walk. I confess I already shadowed it and it wasn't terrifically interesting. For whatever reason, the AI was pretty ******** this game.

A commerce-based domination win might not be as quick as Brad's approach, but I don't think it would present much of a challenge either.

This game was somewhat unique in having such as isolated start. When contact is available earlier, you can often "catch" another civ's religion, then cultivate even stronger relations with that civ (or several civs if you can arrange a religious block) through mutual warring, which provides its own relation bonuses.

If you already shadowed it then we can wait. The slow AI pace probably has more to do with 2 civs having isolated starts, which left 5 civs on 1 land mass. Of those 5 civs 2 were rather quickly eliminated which left a couple of the remaining 3 civs overextended. That would be my guess.

BTW, I heard from Nichelle and Brad is doing better. We should be gearing this one back up real soon then we can move on to our second game.

Hey guys! I’m finally back. Thanks for all the well-wishing…that was some nasty bug I had.

I finished my turns. Not much to report really. Monty died early on, and I declared on Nappy near the end of my turns. We have taken Orleans, and Boston and Chartres should fall in a few turns. While marching on Boston, Nappy’s big stack came out and I killed around a dozen or so units. There are still about a half dozen knights/war elephants left to attack though. I lost quite a few cats in order to destroy the big stack, so we will probably need to build a few more for the eastern war effort.

We will probably lose a few grenadiers outside Boston on your very first turn Gator. That is ok I think, as the remains of the stack can join up with the stack approaching from the south on the jungle/hill. That should spell doom for Boston very soon.

I think I would take our troops that remain from the sacking of Orleans and send them on their way to New York via Mao’s territory.

We have three full boats of troops ready to land outside Paris on your first turn, and a few more boats will be arriving shortly after. Paris’s defenses have already been softened up by Frigates. I have blocked Paris’s south harbor with a frigate, because I don’t think we want his many boats escaping that way. I would leave the north harbor open, however, in hopes that he comes out of the city with a few loaded boats: easy meat for our frigates.

I decided to go ahead and start the war with Nappy for three reasons: 1) I was hoping that by attacking his western front before landing outside his capitol that some of the capitol’s defenders would leave (didn’t happen). 2) Mao had just demanded Paper and I gave it to him. That made our relations with him as good as they have been in a long time. It seemed a perfect time to attack Nappy, because Mao would be less likely to dog pile us. 3) By declaring early, our frigates would have time to soften the defenses of Paris before we landed our invasion force.

We now have a Great Engineer to go with our Great Priest. I think I would use them for a GA, but we could use the Engineer for Versailles if you guys prefer. If we do use GPs for a GA, I would put the specialists in Tiwanaku back to working tiles: there is no way we can generate three more GPs for another GA by the end of the game, and there really isn’t anything else useful we can do with Great People.

Delhi is really unhappy right now and starving, but that is only until we finish connecting the city by road. That should solve its happiness problems.

I decided to go ahead and leave research on since we didn’t need all that much money for upgrades. We will have Printing Press in a few turns, but if you find yourself needing cash don’t hesitate to turn research off. I also gave into Mansa's demand for Astronomy: I hated to do it, but we really need all our trade agreements with him.

Here is the save.

Thanks for being so patient with me guys! :thanx:

Hi Brad,

Nice to see you up and around. Hope you've recovered. :)

Looks good. There are a lot of units in Paris and Boston. Gator has some experience with stacks however! :mischief:

After the Knights complete in the former Azteca, should we start some Cats there?

Good luck Gator, a lot of combat practice coming up for your turns! :hammer:

EDIT - Doubt we'll see much from Gator before Tuesday as The BIG Game is Monday night! Go Gators!!!!

EDIT 2 -
Florida Gators!!
National Champs!!

The Gator Boys played great. There's a photo gallery of the UF students celebrating and some game shots at www.gatorsports.com BTW, the road they are on is US Hwy 441 which runs up the east side of campus. Now we're just hoping they all come back for next year.

I'm probably going to need to be skipped. Too much to do before heading to Milford, CT on Friday. I might be able to play tomorrow night maybe if its just a few turns. Incase it gets to Thursday and I haven't posted then skip me.

EDIT: Thanks Mistfit for the new avatar.

Looked like they were teaching school to me!

Where are we on the roster, btw? :mischief: ;)

Roster
bradleyfeanor - feeling better, starting wars, and cheering a fellow SEC team onto victory
Gator - working, celebrating, packing, celebrating, working more, still celebrating (skipped)
Bede - Up, keep shooting the 3 and the offensive pressure
Bezhukov - skip, at his request - preparing for our next adventure
leif - On deck and blowing kisses to the UCLA cheerleaders, just like Joakim Noah

Hey guys, I've got too much to do and there is no way I can get to this tomorrow so I might as well pass it off now. I suspect we'll be done before I get back on the 17th. Looking forward to the next game. I should have internet access just no civ.

EDIT: BTW, I misidentified the hwy above. They were partying on University Ave, which runs on the north side of campus and crosses 441. But I'm sure it spilled over onto 441.

If that be(de) case then I got it.

Play it tomorrow
