I have finally found some time to submit my first HOF game. I'm pleased with the results although I know it could have been better. I plan on playing some more games so I'll try to set up an Index for my games and keep them in one thread.

I am Sumerian and I select Korea and Byzantines as my opponents, because I wanted the free age change techs and I thought they could help me research.

The Start

Gator_HOF001_01.jpg

I used Map Finder to generate some maps, but I thought this was a good one so I went with it. I was trying to include a luxury in the start but I was ready to play and I hadn’t found one yet.

I went with a farmer’s gambit since there were no barbs in the game. I also set research to Ceremonial Burial in an attempt to get an early SGL. I also decide to build a granary before making any units. This site will run as a 4-turn warrior/settler combo factory.

Gator_HOF001_02.jpg

I was successful with the Republic Slingshot and had already changed governments. I was also the tech leader, as expected, and I had all required techs except for Const., HBR and Currency (5 turns left). I placed the last few cities in a direct line heading for the only horses I saw on the map. I claimed them when I founded Der. I also have claimed iron, although it is not hooked up, and I have only secured one luxury. There is another in sight but is is just outside of Korea's border.

Turn 85 : 900BC
Sumeria settled Kuara

Turn 86 : 875BC
Sumeria settled Kutha
Sumeria settled Nagsu

Turn 91 : 750BC
Sumeria settled Susa

I enter the Middle Ages in 710BC and gift Korea and Byzantine using The Big Picture. Unfortunately, they both got Monotheism. I trade for it and I receive Feudalism. I have not generated any SGL yet and I am currently working on the Pyramids.

My mighty military consists of 1 settler, 18 workers and 5 Enkidu Warriors. Here’s a look at my vast empire.

Gator_HOF001_03.jpg

The Middle Ages progress nicely. I continue to add cities and build four Great Wonders. Here is my timeline for the Middle Ages.

Turn 100 : 570BC
Sumeria settled Tutub

Turn 101 : 550BC
Sumeria settled Kutallu
Sumeria settled Anshan
Sumeria settled Babil

Turn 126 : 50BC
Sumeria created The Hanging Gardens in Ur

Turn 133 : 90AD
Sumeria created JS Bach's Cathedral in Lagash

Turn 137 : 170AD
Sumeria created Sistine Chapel in Sumer

Turn 150 : 340AD
Sumeria created Copernicus' Observatory in Ur

The map is pretty well filled in now. I have managed a 4 to 5-turn research rate for most of the Middle Ages, although I did detour for 2 non-required techs. I researched Music Theory for Bach’s and I researched Economics for Smith’s. I traded for Chivalry and Printing Press but not for any required techs.

As you can see my luck with SGL is very bad. Even though I was the first to research almost every tech I still have not generated a leader. I was also 2 turns from completing the Pyramids when Korea built it.

I enter the Industrial Age in 490AD, with a military of 25 workers, 10 muskets and my 5 Enkidu Warrior.

Gator_HOF001_04.jpg

The Industrial Age starts with me gifting Korea (Steam) and Byzantine (Nationalism). We all get different techs and I am not able to trade for Steam until after I receive my free tech, Medicine. This is where my game starts getting fun.

I have no coal, but there is one on my border with Korea.

Gator_HOF001_05.jpg

So, I quickly rush a settler in Susa. Then this happens the very next turn.

Gator_HOF001_06.jpg

I go ahead and use the settler to found the coal-stealing city anyway, which turns out to be a good thing.

Here is my timeline for the Industrial Age.

Turn 166 : 500AD
Sumeria captured the Korean city Hyangsan

Turn 167 : 510AD
Sumeria settled New Erech

Turn 178 : 620AD
Sumeria created Smith's Trading Company in Sumer

Turn 182 : 660AD
Sumeria created Newton's University in Ur
Sumeria started golden age

Turn 191 : 750AD
Sumeria created Theory of Evolution in Lagash

Turn 202 : 860AD
Sumeria ended golden age
Sumeria created Hoover Dam in Ur

Turn 210 : 940AD
Korea captured the Sumerian city Hyangsan

I maintain a mostly 4-turn tech pace and as the techs are learned I soon discover that I have no rubber or oil  so no tanks, infantry etc… This is not good, but since I’m shooting for space I can live without these two resources. My luck with SGL has not changed, still have not generated one. I end the Industrial Age in 970AD.

*********************************

As the Modern Age starts I gift Byzantine (Ecology) and Korea (Rocketry) to the new age and I get Fission. I have a UN prebuild well under way so I am comfortable trading Fission away to gain Rocketry. Surprisingly, I cannot trade for Ecology yet. I’m also only researching at a 5-turn rate now and then I notice this.

Gator_HOF001_07.jpg

The only two sources of aluminum are not in my lands. I’m faced with the prospects of abandoning the game at this point because this is the state of my military.

Gator_HOF001_08.jpg

I’m weak to both Byzantine and Korea. After taking a break I decide to continue the game and I know there is not enough time to hand build a proper military so I start drafting conscript TOW Infantry and rush/switch builds to get some artillery. I also pick Korea to be my intended target because they had the fewer cities and they had aluminum, rubber and 2 luxuries I was importing. Korea had oil but it is located in the city way to the south and I figured that the Byzantine would take that source when I brought them into the war with an alliance.

:ar15: So I begin the Draft. I draft 15 TOW and rush 6 more artillery in 980AD. I am now strong to Korea so I picked the right target. I disband the 5 Enkidu Warriors to stay under the troop limit. I draft 5 more TOW in 990AD and gather my forces together. I put a TOW and a Musket (I have 11 of them) in each of my border cities to brace for a counter attack. Since TOW only have 1 move I have to declare war and then move them into Korea territory.

In 1010AD even though I’m 1 turn away from learning Computers, I decide to lower my science rate from 90% to 30% since I am running out of money after rushing the artillery. This only adds 1 turn to the research time, which was about 7 turns to start with. Korea’s rifle has changed into a TOW overnight. I use the artillery to redline the defenders and then attack with conscript TOWs. This is ugly as my TOWs redline off the free defensive shot, but I capture Nampo and pick up a luxury. I complete the turn by drafting more TOW. I have 23 of them after losing half my attackers.

Did I say this was going to be ugly? Unlike war weariness, draft unhappiness is quick to strike. I’m still 2 turns away from Computers due to all the draft unhappiness in 1020AD and I fail to capture Seoul leaving 1 redlined spear in defense. By 1030AD I’m up to 12 artillery pieces and I do take Seoul this turn. Seoul has the Pyramids, the Library and Magellan’s.

Upon learning Computers in 1040AD I finally see a message I have waited for all game.

Gator_HOF001_09.jpg

This allows me to switch some of my Wonder builds around. The UN was scheduled to complete next turn but I switch it for SETI. The UN will now complete in 10 turns but it should not matter if I lose it since Korea and Byzantine are at war. I decide to save my SGL for The Internet to help my research rate, currently at 8 turns due to the war. I also capture Inchon that turn.

I fall 1 unit short of capturing Hyangsan in 1050AD so I quickly surround it so it cannot be reinforced. 1060AD sees Inchon flip back to Korea taking a few TOW that were healing there. By now the Byzantine have captured Cheju and that aluminum source but Wonsan had expanded to place the other source under Korean control. So they have switched sources. I use a settler and claim the aluminum near Wonsan and I capture Hyangsan.

In 1070AD I capture Inchon again and found New Akshak as a stepping stone to the rubber city. In 1080AD I capture Pyongyang with the Statue of Zeus, Knights Templar, rubber and ivory. After having a few flips I decide that Korea cannot remain in the game. In 1090AD I capture Wonsan with Universal Suffrage. Luckily I have been able to go 2 turns without having to draft any troops but I am now down to 12 TOW so I must draft again. War weariness is getting high due to the high casualty losses I’m suffering. I end the turn by founding New Zabalam which allows me artillery access to Korea’s last 2 northern cities.

Byzantine finally takes out the southern city in 1100AD and I capture Pusan. I learn Miniaturization in 1110AD and use the Big Picture to rush The Internet. I also capture Korea’s last city. The war is finally over.

I’m at a 5-turn research rate for Space Flight but I can now focus on science again. Since Byzantine does not own any uranium I freely trade and gift them techs to keep them happy. I cannot defend myself against them if they were to attack.

The rest of the game becomes a “What’s my Line” for specialist. Some turns they are taxmen other turns they are scientist. I do this to achieve a 4-turn rate after Space. I learn the rest of the techs in the following years.

Space in 1160AD
Satellites in 1200AD
Nuclear Power in 1240AD
Laser in 1265AD
Robotics in 1285AD – I also check out my prebuilds so that I can build the final parts using the Big Picture
Synthetic Fibers in 1305AD
Superconductor in 1325AD

Gator_HOF001_10.jpg

I then use the Big Picture to change my 2 prebuilds, while Lagash completes its part on time. This completes my space ship and I hit the launch button. I win in 1325AD with a score of 4973.

Nice going Gator! Scratched and clawed your way to victory.

Thanks, it was a fun game. Having to fight at the end made it interesting.

I have started another Monarch space attempt, this time on a small map with 3 other sci civs. At the start of the Middle ages I am only 1 tech ahead, but at this stage that is worth about 12 turns. I'll post more on that game later.

Nice game and write up Gator. Looking forward to more.

On another note, I hope that 9-17-05 is a sad day for you and your Gators in the Swamp. The Vols are just looking to hurt people this year; I mean, look at all the fights they've been in in the offseason!

I second that

I'm getting ganged up on. Oh my. :)

There's still plenty of time for the rest of UT's starters to be arrested before the game. If Phil would require them to go to class they might stay out of jail. :p

It should be a really good game. I've got my season tickets so I'll be there.

I really want to go down for it. Gainesville is a fun town; I was down there for the Miami game in 2001 (No, Im not a fan despite my moniker). So many stories... Anyways, it should be a good one, as usual. Im not as scared of the new Meyer offense as I am of fighting through Florida's 310 lb.+ avg line and putting pressure on Leak.

Just hit Industrial Age in my next attempt (Monarch/Std) and guess what?

No Coal again.

Monarch Space - Small Map - submitted 7/1/05, entry #960

I select Ottomans for this game. Opponents are Russia, Korea and Byzantine. I’m hoping with 3 other scientific civs I can get some help researching after the Ancient Age, but that did not happen. Here is a look at my starting position.

Gator_HOF002_01.jpg

I was able to get a 4-turn warrior/settler factory going from this location as well. I was also able to generate settlers from some of my other core cities, so my expansion phase actually lasted until 340 AD, which nearly took my through the whole Middle Ages.

Luckily in this game I was able to generate a SGL in 1425BC, which I used to rush the Pyramids. Upon hitting the Middle Ages in 630BC I gifted the other civs to tech parity. The Byzantine got Engineering, while both the others got Feudalism. I was able to trade Republic for Feudalism with Korea and then I traded Republic and Feudalism to Byzantine for Engineering. I received Invention (a second tier tech), even though Monotheism was unknown. I guess I was slated to receive either Feudalism or Engineering on the age change and it gave me the first available tech along that path.

Here is a look at the 610BC map.

Gator_HOF002_02.jpg

The Middle Ages progress with me continuing to expand and research. After researching Monotheism I had hoped that one of the other civs would have learned Literature but they did not so I had to back track and research it on my own. I build the Statue of Zeus in 150BC and the Hanging Gardens in 90BC. In 340AD I found the last city ending my initial expansion phase. Below is a look at the 350AD map. I complete Sistine’s in 360AD and Copernicus’ in 410AD. Other than the free age change techs I research every Middle Age tech, except Chivalry, on my own. I also detour again to grab Bach’s (Music Theory) and Smith’s (Economics).

Gator_HOF002_03.jpg

I hit the Industrial Age at 510AD (no major changes since the 350AD map). Again I bring the other 3 civs up to tech parity. Korea gets Medicine, while the other 2 get Steam. Using the Big Picture, I trade Music Theory and Economics to Russia for Steam, then I trade Music Theory, Economics, Steam, 1075 gold and 25 gpt to Korea for Medicine. I feel it’s overpriced but I should easily outdistance them in techs again and this gives me 3 techs on the age change again. I find that I am without coal again. Russia has some in a border city, so I declare on Russia to gain the coal. In 530AD I complete Bach’s. By 560AD I have captured 4 Russian cities and secured the coal. I’ve finally hit a 4 to 5-turn research rate so I decide to delay the completion of TOE. I push forward researching on my own. In 750AD I finish Smith’s.

I learn Refining in 790AD and discover that I have no oil. So I upgrade a few knights to sipahis and declare on the Byzantine in 860AD to get their oil. I forgot to establish an embassy first and did not realize they had a MPP with Korea but I am strong to both of them anyway. This kicks off my Golden Age. I complete Universal Suffrage in 870AD. The Byzantine put up little resistance and I leave them with a city on the mainland on 2 unknown city locations. They were at war with Russia and I wanted to keep them alive for the age change. I now turn my attentions on Korea and systematically capture their cities. When I discovered Flight in 930AD I generated a second SGL.I am able to maintain a 4-turn research rate for Atomic Theory and Electronics so I have still not completed the TOE. My Golden Age ends in 1060AD and I properly time the completion of TOE to allow this.

Gator_HOF002_04.jpg

Gator_HOF002_05.jpg

I use the Big Picture again and bring the other civs to tech parity. This time they all get a different tech, Byzantine gets Fission, Korea gets Rocketry, and Russia gets Computers. I can’t make a trade yet so I set my research to Ecology and exit the Big Picture. When the TOE completes I immediately learn Ecology and go back into the Big Picture, I see that I got Computers on the age change. I am now able to trade for Fission and Rocketry and I select Miniaturization as my 2nd free tech from TOE.

So I pick up 5 Modern Age techs and I have aluminum and uranium. No more need for war. I use the SGL to rush The Internet and I can research at a 4-turn rate in the Modern Age as well. I almost trigger a domination victory in 1160 after a bunch of cultural expansions. I am knocking out the techs at the 4-turn pace when in 1275AD Russia declares on me, and ROP rapes me to capture a city just outside my core. I quickly institute the draft and 56 conscript Mech Infantries are sent to the Russian front. As I toy with Russia for the rest of the game I do accidentally trigger a domination victory but thanks to the HOF rules I reload from the last autosave and continue the game.

I end the game with a space launch in 1320AD. Only 1 turn faster than my first attempt, even with the larger map size and the extra scientific civ in the game. Looking back I lost too much time in the Middle and Industrial Ages when I was not hitting a 4 to 5-turn research rate. I think this date can be much better.

Gator_HOF002_06.jpg

Thanks.

If it wasn't for that trading session this game would have taken another 10 or more turns to finish. What was nice about playing as the Ottoman was the late Golden Age. That allowed me to research those expensive Industrial Age techs in 4 turns abd save TOE for the really expensive Modern Age techs.

I've picked up playing a deity 100K attempt that I had started several months ago. I'll try to post a midgame report on that one in a few days. I'm nearing the end of the warring and then I need to start cranking on the cities and the culture.

Sneak Peak

Deity 100K game

Here's a look at the start.

Gator_HOF003_01.jpg

Here is a quick pick of the current state of the game. I recently eliminated Germany and China, so only America is left to deal with and I am "Strong" to them.

Gator_HOF003_02.jpg

I haven't learned Education yet so when I capture the TOA it will still work, what I'm unsure of is if I should continue to research and go the communism route or stay with the TOA and go Feudalism?
