Hello all,
Being new to the boards and the whole SG concept, as well as fairly new to Civ4 in general (been playing on and off since before Warlords, past 2-3 months I've been playing every chance I get
), I'd like to gauge the interest level in a slightly less ...suicidal... series of games, for the newer folks here. Games would be open to more experienced players, should they wish to help out - though I would suspect many would likely be bored with the lower difficulties, so instead I will say all lurkers are welcome to post advice for the participants.
The concept is thus: learn to play competetively under any circumstance, with any civilization, adapting our strategy as the game dictates. An added bonus is that those new to SGs (or the game) can learn to produce better turn-by-turn reports (and thus be better team members for future games).
My first SP game in BtS I got Suryavarman (Khmer) and ended up with a Domination win because my neighbors - Monty, Joao, and Dutch-boy, hated my guts and so kept declaring war, even though all but Monty shared my religion. I attained a decent tech lead early on (pikes, maces) and was able to handily defeat them defensively (I was hoping for a non-war win), but they stayed aggressive so I decided to push back. (ps, Heroic Epic + West Point + GG Academy + 3 or so GG trainers + barracks = instant 4 promotion units which I was building in 1 turn each, WHOOOO!) Anyhow, the point of that little digression is to say that for these games, a win is a win, even if we have to change strategies midgame. If we start out attempting a diplomatic win, but end up with a military (conquest, domination) win because we're forced into a corner and nobody likes us, that's ok.
Game Setups:
-------------
Map size: Standard +
Map Type: Pangea, Continents, Fractal, Hemispheres (ie: large landmass, somewhat earthy-type maps)
Era: Ancient
Speed: Epic*
Difficulty: Prince*
(all other selections will be random)
*notes - I chose Epic speed because I believe that it actually provides the best balance between the shifting-time-per-turn scale of Civ and the general speed of technological research. Prince difficulty for now, unless the first game(s) prove to be far too easy, in which case it will be upped to Monarch. Map size will likely be standard or large, depending on the level of interest (less interest, smaller map, shorter game). We will not be picking our leader/civ or any of the opponents, so what we have and what we're against will depend entirely on the 'dice' roll.
The rules for the SG itself (turns per round, etc) will likely be based on the 'standard' setup I've gathered from the other posts here, and will be formulated once I see how many (if any) players are interested in this idea.
All comments, ideas, etc. are welcome. Please post a "I'm in" if you want to participate.
edit: newbie-lurker types who may be hesitant, please sign up and join!
Thanks!
