General Knowledge Quiz

He's that guy with the Arbiter avatar who is co GM of RfmK III...

Sorry, wasn't that the next question ? :mischief:

Sorry, I was waiting for D'art to confirm this. He seems to not doing so, so here's my question.

Not counting the sun, what is the closest star to Earth that is visible to the naked eye and not part of a double or triple star system?

Alpha Centauri!

That's a Triple Star System, and a wrong answer.

Proxima centauri is closer than Alpha centauri, but it is a triple star system.

Then you have Barnard's Star, but it's not visible with the naked eye. Later you'll see Sirius, but it's a double star system.

By the way, there is a strange anecdote about Sirius. There is an African tribe (the Dogons), who seems to have some extraordinary astronomical knowledge. They for instance know that Sirius A has a faint companion Sirius B, but this companion can be observed only with a telescope and was first seen in 1862...
So some claim they were settled on Earth by Aliens thousands of years ago, and that they were coming from Sirius.

So, that left us with Epsilon Eridani.

Epsilon Eridani it is. :goodjob:

Damn! I now have to find a question!

Hmm...

At the end of his general studies, Valery Giscard d'Estaing (who will be president of the French republic from 1974 to 1981) took the entry exam to the Ecole Nationale Polytechnique (the most prestigious French high school). He succeeded... but decided not to go to this school. Why?

IIRC, it's because he did ENA first and then X. A bright young man, you might say.

No, and for you information Ecole Polytechnique is better than University.
The French "high schools" (grandes écoles) is an educational system parallel to university, where it is harder to get it and which are more reknown.
That's one of the reason why French university usually rank low in international comparison.

He wanted to fight in the war (WWII)?
