Actually I do not think that carriers are obsolete yet, but if history has shown us one thing it is that each tech is eventually obsolete.
For the purpose a carrier has, nothing else is available yet, but the carrier is getting more threatened by 'recent' developments. Anti-ship cruise missiles are posing a threat that did not exist in its past and big ships do make big (and slow) targets, so it is more dangerous for carries than it was 25 years ago.
That no carrier has sunken yet proves very little, they did not take on any halfway decent enemy for the last years. Of course it still will be difficult to sink one, but it is getting easier to do so (relatively speaking).

My understanding is that surface ships still have a military use. Basically supporting ground troops, and landing operations. No transports that I know of are submarine, so a world power still needs a surface fleet if just for that. But the ability to launch missiles and rain artillery fire from the sea during landings is also of use.
However, if a world war between major powers kicked off, I doubt any surface vessels, including carriers would last long. Then again if a world war kicked off, nuclear anhilation would also be pretty likely, so there isn't much point in fretting about the obsolence of a surface fleet, considering if they were taken out by subs, there probably wouldn't be much of civilization left anyway.

The question you ought to be asking yourselves is how Carriers can be more useful in Civ because as it stands, I never build them. They're too expensive and offer very little benefits. They're useful for when you attack a continent completely controlled by enemies, but after you capture a few cities, you don't really have as much use for them. Their usefulness in Civ is disproportionately small compared to the real world and the in-game costs of construction.
Carriers represent the ultimate ability for force projection in the modern age. While I doubt they'll be obsolete before the end of the century, I think the massive ships we see today will be phased out in favor of smaller drone carriers once drones are capable of providing the same functions as all aircraft. For that reason then, we might see submarine drone carriers develop since they wouldn't need to be nearly as big as a current aircraft carrier.

To get back on topic, I still would like to get the reskins of the 3 snafusmith units, I doubt he was opposed to it, as danrell seems to believe. Danrell, please check whether Snafusmith really does not want them posted (I doubt it, he said they are improved somewhat, but close to the original ones, that is not an objection in my book) and do post them if he does not object.

Very nice, though the one thing I would suggest for the future is removing that "88" on the side, not all ships were that number y'know
