i've been experimenting with the GL chances and i've noticed a few things...
1. your chance of getting a GL/Promotion is much higher if the fight is closer (e.g archer vs spearman has a higher chance of promotion than knight vs warrior).
your chance of getting a GL/Promtion is much higher when attacking the enemies capital (which is why i have been hitting the captital first, then moving on to the next capital etc...)
your chace of getting a GL/Promotion is much higher when fighting more than one battle in the same turn. (i know this has already been mentioned, but i thought i'd add it anyway).
i don't have any numbers to back this up, but its just what i have observed after many games.
what i haven't noticed is if the chance of getting a GL is any higher under militaristic civs. obviously the promotion chance is but the GL chance... not too sure. and the heroic epic apparantly increases your chances by around 20% which is a small enough number that many players do not notice it. but the 5 culture is nice.
