over-powered civ/leader combinations

I don't mind them if everyone gets them, otherwise it will feel like i'm cheating against those that don't have access to any, especially against AI opponents
Not only that, even if I choose not to use them, as we saw above they will infect many strategies people come up with - that whole build hinged on the mementos he chose. AND you can switch them out for new ones between ages! So that’s potentially 6 extra attributes in a game for example.

I thought it was going to be things like the Legacy Legend Attributes, where there is some trade off, or a little yield boost to get going. This is not “small bonuses for playing the same leader a lot” like it was initially presented.

I could tell you about how the Maurya are secretly the biggest warmongers in the game, but this above video lays it out perfectly.
It's not a secret. This civilization gives mass hapiness, and who says more hapiness, says that we can more easily exceed the limit of settlements, and avoid revolts. Who says hapiness, says celebrations, and a lot of celebration gives a big production bonus for military units.

In addition, it brings general bonuses in science and gold from hapiness. In short, it has absolutely everything to prepare for war.

Having two pantheons also adds a consistent bonus that makes Maurya have less to monitor certain parameters, and more to focus on preparing for war.

In addition to that, its unique cavalry unit greatly reduces the effectiveness of opponents' fortifications. It is perfect for waging war during its age, and it provides fertile ground for all war-mongering civilizations of the Age of Exploration and the Modern Age.

eh, I imagine there are gonna be a good amount of strategies without them, like I said above, probably won't be any different than civ 6 with game modes.
You’re probably right. I’m just starting to worry about how extensive the power/feature creep is going to get if it’s this far already.

I wasn’t really a fan of the game modes either though (except barb clans, loved that one). They were kinda fun at the end of the development cycle, but mementos are being added at the beginning..

At least you can easily just not use them. I think for me it will depend if I want to play a "fun" game vs a "challenge" game. Fun games would be like the above, max all the parameters in your favor, and see how crazy you can get. Challenge games are ones where I try to beat the AI on open ground. But it will be kind of annoying to have the "OMG this combo breaks the game" where the first step is to pop in a specific memento combination.

The problem is that Civ hasn't had a legitimate 'challenge' for some time now, between inept AI and unbalanced systems, and OP strategies. You have to go out of your way to create a 'challenge'.

I think this was a part of why Civ 6 is so popular. There is tons of 'stuff' to play with in essentially a sandbox world where the AI sort of plays the game but doesn't actually compete with you.

A lot of newer 4x type games have thrown in all sorts of unbalanced systems and civilizations/leaders/etc. The games become a puzzle to find 'exploits'.

I much prefer a tightly balanced game that rewards actual strategy mastery.

Hopefully something as bonkers as unpatched Hungary in 6... I am not one for warring in Civ 6, just let me settle my cities and trade and be cool...OG Hungary was hysterical with swole hordes of City State troops flying across the map. So if anything is as busted as that, and even being nerfed they are still OP, I am excited to see it. Seems influence is a key resource, that will be me on the 6th, scouring for the leader/civ combo that gives me all the influence. Befriend all the city states, befriend all the AI's, let me be cool. Though interestingly, it seems the AI in Civ 7 are more prone to giving up cities in peace deals, so maybe warfare in 7 might be what I want to do...

The Exercitus Romanus civc grants the Legatus the Bulwark promotion for free as well. So that would mean you only need 1 promotion
Not exactly. The free Bastion promotion does not unlock other promotions, which means you still need 2 promotions in addition to the Bastion to settle a town.

yes, Maurya seems extremely strong. i have them as my top ancient civilization right now for almost any path that involves domination. they will lead well into Mongols, Meiji, and Mughals.

With Xerxes the Achaemenid

Aksum > Chola > Siam

Trade routes for the win
One thing I want to know. Xerxes specifies forming a trade route with a merchant - so will Aksum's Dhow which creates trade routes actually work with his ability?

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but Lafayette + Rome is very powerful. In the video below, he is able to get +12 combat from traditions on the legion unit in the Antiquity Age. Combined with other bonuses, his legions are 3x more powerful than other base units!!

This doesn't even seem particularly challenging to do. Multiplayer is going to be such a cheese fest

Anyone want to post the specific so I can be lazy and not watch it?
Legions get +2 bonus strength from each tradition in policy slot.
Lafayette grants +1 bonus strength to every unit from each tradition in policy slot. And of course, this stacks with legion's ability.
Rome has 4 traditions. So you get +12. And you can stack more bonuses with army commander.

Throw in Mexico because all their bonuses come from amount of Traditions slotted, you can use Spain to get there.
