Getting to know multiplayer

A thought for strategy in the big multiplayer (generally 18-player pitboss) games that are being played:

Form a solid alliance ASAP, with known-to-be-competent players if at all possible. An alliance with 4-5 members will be able to go up the tech tree at close to max speed, and will be able to crush individual civs readily. You don't necessarily want to ally with your nearest neighbors, because you and your allies won't have much expansion room. You all want to eliminate civs one by one between you (using 2v1 if not better), so that by mid-game (these games do potentially run through to the industrial ages) you've each got large civs with (mostly) friendly borders. Playing Switzerland in these games, horse-trading and watching others beat the crap out of each other while building your civ up might get you pretty far in tech, but sooner or later an alliance will take a liking to your production-rich civ.

What to do when it's down to just the alliance members in the game? I'll let you know when I get there. ;) But if you're going to backstab, make it good for the win because it'll probably be the last time you get allies in that sort of game.

Easy there buddy, I'm not talking about CTON ruleset games.

Yup, forming alliances is definitely a solid strategy in FFA games, especially when you already know some of the players before the game begins.
