I doubt such huge tanks were designed mainly for combat but to demoralize the opponent. Psychological warfare is a powerful weapon in itself. And a demoralized opponent is a halfway conquered one.
How would a tank hidden away and never seen demoralize an enemy and halfway win the war? It doesn't. The Maus was on the proving grounds when it was sabotaged by the Soviets. The superheavy tank designs were not practical for use; and history has proven they are still not, since none have been pursued.
I will believe what history has shown is the true case.
