Just give us an option to build space colonies in outer space and call the "death robot" a Gundam. ;x

On a serious note; I'd love to see something like this used:

votoms_mecha_1.jpg

It's basically a "one-man walking tank". It's from one of my favorite television shows, and the most realistic depiction of war robots I've seen.

Scopedog! I also like the Arm Slaves from Full Metal Panic as well. If I wanted to be silly, I'd suggest the Bonta-kun versions.

If I were at home, I could look up the civopedia entry for the Assault Mech from Next War. IIRC, the key sentence was something like:

"Critics forget how incredibly COOL they are."

Yeah, square-cube law makes the humongous ones a wee bit difficult. Smaller ones like the Scopedog (or the Bonta-kun) are more feasable.

When I think of cartoons, I think of funny stuff. I don't know how much (If any of any) of the Gundam franchise you've watched, but there are a few of the series that make it quite insulting to call it a "cartoon". Animation might be the proper term, or anime as it seems to be labeled. But series such as Victory and Zeta Gundam go down as masterpieces in my book, with drama unparalleled, even by those silly American television shows that people seem to consider so amazing or epic.

Oh yes, a "cartoon" by Yoshiyuki "Kill'Em All" Tomino is such a bundle of joy.

I guess I'll throw in my suggestion for a Bolo as a substitute. Marks I, II, III and IV could be possible in the near future era. Though sadly, those earlier Marks never had firepower in the "megatons per second" category.

Yeah that is so correct! because having a spacerace to alpha centauri in a faster than light spaceship is soooooo realistic and sensible.

Alpha Centauri is ~4 ly away, and it takes minimum 8 turns in game to reach it. It's significantly slower than light.

It's getting close to release date, and they still haven't said this is a joke. I'm getting worried. I thought they would have said April Fool's by now.

On a more serious note, I guess I can live with it. I still think it's silly. Yes previous civs had silly elements (Elvis), but they weren't integral to gameplay. You can argue this unit isn't integral to gameplay either. It's unlikely I will build it.

nukes>GDR

As for Alpha Centauri the great thing about that project is it is an optimist peaceful winning method. Compare that to GDR which turns civ franchise into even more of a wargame. I am worried civ5 will be too focussed on war. But I could be wrong, we'll find out in a few weeks. And yes we can reach other solar systems without faster than life travel. But there are some major technical hurdles to overcome (like surviving in space for that long), getting enough fuel to get a craft up to sufficient speed, etc.

It's not a joke. Believe it.
We've seen the civilopedia entry at the Gamescom, it's in, point.

I also like the Arm Slaves from Full Metal Panic as well. If I wanted to be silly, I'd suggest the Bonta-kun versions.

I happen to have a few rather "crude" models for full metal panics, they are readily usable for civ 4 (I build these in plan to use for Civ 5, testing in Civ 4 as the model system should be similar if not the same).

I need someone to help me fix/edit and recolor them. Also there are currently no animation. So if some one are willing to work on them...

The models are

M6,M9,Salvage, Arbalest, (Arbalest and the M9 are extremely similar), Codarl / Venom / Shadow (these are simlar as well) and of course the ... bontakun... ;)

ZZ Gundam was pretty light hearted, same with Heavy Metal L-Gaim. Of course, then we have Aura Battler Dunbine which was incredibly depressing. Lol, having mecha during the medieval ages would be epic. xD

As far as I'm concerned, Civ V doesn't have a future era. The only thing representing the future era is the GDR, which will just make the late game feel incomplete.

no, there are future techs like nanotechnology, particle physics and "ouch" future tech.

I, for one, play Civ because it's a challenging game.

And I see trying to take down enemy GDR as being quite a challenge if you don't have one. Or, perhaps, I'll build just one GDR and have it be at the center of my army. I can do whatever I want.

Just because the GDR is in the game doesn't mean I'm forced to make dozens of 'em.

I voted "No" and would like to sign this thread again by saying it's the most silliest thing about CiV.
I mean, hey - they keep talking about realism (let 1UPT aside for a moment) and granting a GDR to the future era.
It's NOT funny nor realistic in any sense of game design. I mean, mankind has not even managed to use nano technics in all it's dimension (it's one of those techs in CiV right?) but constructs Death robots?!?

Firaxis, please give me this G(OD) D(AMN) R(EVOKE) button for the GDR!!!
:please:

Civ is all about layability over realism. Always was.

How does a Giant Death robot add to playability?!?

I'm aware of the fact that Civ is by no means about realism. But it would have been better to interchange this feature with another - that's my opinion.

Bipedal walkers would never make sense in war. They would be extremely expensive to produce, have few advantages over tanks (unless they could fly like Gundams), and would be easy to kill with aircraft or cruise missiles because of their enormous profile.

Also, there's a reason IRL robots use threads, wheels, or multiple legs - it is very hard to effectively program a bipedal robot that doesn't fall down

Um, in which case, read the poll options again: I think you meant to click Yes ("I want the option to turn it off") :D

I voted "yes". Personally I like such units and I'm glad it's in the game but, like minority of people here from what I see, I respect the fact that someone might not like it. I was always saying that Civ games should be very customizable - the players should have as much options to turn in/off as it is possible. Do you want to have this giant robot - turn it on and you have it. Do not? Turn it off. Do you want to play longer and have future units and techs - turn such option on and play. If you dislike such idea and want to play "standard civ" - turn it off and be happy.

Tolerance and a bit of respect for others is a good thing you know.

I voted "yes i want that" and i even think "it's not enough". I really like to build a empire from the scratch until today. But i really can't understand why civ5 should stop in our time? Whats wrong with real big bunch of future techs that goes far beyond Giant Death Robots. Give me railguns, lasers, solar fusion reactors, real nano technology, cyborgs and so on. BTS^5. I also loved the space mod, where you could settle the whole galaxy. :D

I really see no reason why the game should stop at the present-time. Just because some players don't like scifi? Then just give them an option "no scifi" content or even an age-limitation like "only techs until the (for example) classic age are allowed". Don't see a reason why they left out scifi content nearly completly.

The only Civ-playing friend I know who's gotten to the GDR yet said that their game was over before they could actually finish building one. So I'm not too worried about game balance that far out on the edges of the bell curve.

However, it's also not true that combat robots are impractical. Many nations' militaries right now are spending multi-billions to develop them and they're already being used.

Yes they are but not Giant bipedal Death Robots like from some overated sifi!
I would be all for robotics in civ, only if it follows logical progression of current technology.
So UAVs etc.

Here's some cool youtubes showing a working quadriped robot. Biped probably won't work, but quadriped maybe. This robot is for transporting for soldiers. A soldier's pack is 100+ pounds. This robot would carry most of that for them, which makes soldiers able to move quicker and have more endurance. The next step would be adding weapons. It obviously can handle the weight.

Robots are not "SF" which I'm assuming is a ridicliously lazy way of saying "Sci-Fi" lol.

Kinda like saying "Sci-Fi" instead of just spelling out "Science Fiction".

They exist and are real.

You like playing combat just like mordern combat in real life, well we use robotics in warfare so yeah, welcome to the future sir, Robots are real.

A giant death robot can be built with todays technology. So I don't really see your point. The main reason why people don't like them is because they would be drastically inefficient in most cases.

No, it couldn't. Besides, the OP never said robotics were impossible. But you're not going to see Gigantor any time soon. But giant death robots...maybe if you like ping pong.

If you don't want them in your game then thats fine, you don't have to build them, personally I would prefer a lot more future or "SF" units in the game, the "Future Era" they have given us is the worst "Future" Era I have seen o.0, Atleast I get the GDR though, If you don't like the GDR then make a mod to remove it, hopefully someone else will make a mod to enchance the future era somewhat and then we can all have our cake and eat it.

P.s.s I voted Yes, Bring on the Giant Robot of DEATH!

Personally, I think its a dumb idea. But Civ 5 isn't very good at its current state so I'm not surprised that the developers put a Giant Robot in it. (Edited for being too grumpy minded)
