Gifting units

Hi, this is my first post....

I was playing a game yesterday: Continents, standard size, on noble. I was the tech leader, and doing pretty well. My island was all peace and quiet, no aggression at all. (I used the ai civ to my north as a buffer from Hannibal) The other continent was ruled by Napoleon and 3 other smaller ai civs. I did not want to get involved when Nap started vassalising the smaller civs, but at the same time I didn’t want him to control the entire continent. So when he attacked Isabella I declined her when she wanted help. This made her annoyed towards me. But I sent her 3-4 galleons with units, which I unloaded and then gifted to her.

The gift did not seem to influence her opinion of me. After a few rounds I had a spy on the scene. The units had not been moved even though Nap had his invasion army only a few squares of to the side mowing towards her capitol. After a few more rounds, she capitulated. The units were never used.

Question: Will the AI use gifted units? Can gifting units make the ai friendlier towards me?

Its well known, that AI uses gifted caravel+misionray to spread your religion. I dont know how about military units.

Can gifting units make the ai friendlier towards me?
definitely no.

Btw I would like to have a different way to help an AI in war, not olny "join us to destroy...", like military help, resource help, gold help etc., without going in war.

Supplying your enemy's enemy with weapons should be possible. Stingers and what not....
