Gigantic Map Option

File is no longer available.

I have removed it for a few reasons. First of all, Sirian has shown us a better and more efficient way to create bigger world sizes by editing the Python files located in the Public Maps folder. Also, I would suggest waiting for a patch to fix the several issues most of us are having with running these larger maps, not to mention the problems with random map generation.

36 masochists have downloaded it already...I find the huge map to be just that!

There can't be enough hours in the day to do a domination victory on a gigantic map...there can't.

This is a nice mod, and I have installed it.

However, it is going to quickly become very inconvenient for every mod to require replacing the existing file - it will be hard to have more than one mod operating at a time.

Is it possible to just post the code, and instructions for pasting it into the file? It's a bit more work on the user's part, but would make it possible to install more than one such modification.

what kind of a civ player ARE you if you assume a game SHOULD be finished in under a week? ;)
this is exactly what i expect a game to be: epic.
the notion that has been propagated by take2 that you can play a game of civ in your LUNCHBREAK is obscene at best :crazyeye:

so, thanks for this map option :D

Maybe something like a "mod-switcher" would be a good idea. It came really handy when someone made one for Homeworld 2, and from what I can see it would be really useful in Civ 4.

Great mod btw, it's on my list of things to try out. I like longer games, and this will extend that indefinately :D.

I confirm that the changes work!!!

HOWEVER  It took an eternity to load and eventually crashed and closed after about 10 turns.

It also consumed my total RAM (1G) and about 250M of virtual RAM --- first application I have ever had running that has taken 100%RAM:)

I may try it again with all the settings minimized but really appreciate the effort put into it as it has given me yet more insite into the XML files that were changed -- I have only played with Units and Civinfo so far.

Thanks Dave

Don't tell people to overwrite the original files. Tell them to put the mod in customassets instead. That way there is no risk of losing the originals. The only problem comes if you want to use more then one mod changing the same file(s)... but that's a problem either way.

If you're ever worried about losing the originals, well, don't delete them. For example if you need to replace a file called "CivX.py" you could rename it "CivX.py.original" ... then when you want to revert back to the original, it's easy.

Someone should write a mod manager program, we develop a standard file format for the changes, and then you fire up the program, select the changes you want, and it modifies your xml appropriately.

It would be handy for "mods that aren't really mods", so to speak, like this one.

For those interested, I've edited the first post of the other thread explaining exactly how to edit map sizes if you wish to do so on your own.

There's no reason to really make this a "mod" as it alters no original lines of code. So, it shouldn't be a problem if nobody wants to use it. Just don't select the option when starting a game.

But I do agree, it's going to get a little confusing and problematic when people start releasing a bunch of other edits and additions to files you already have that are edited. :crazyeye:

Dave, I've never had this big map crash on me, but I have hit a few jerky/slow spots. And to think, people want even bigger maps.

Several times it took a long time to follow a command -- like "go to" and the "waiting for other Civs" was maybe 30 seconds to a minute.

The time it crashed it "hung" in the "waiting for other Civs" mode for several minutes then just "closed" to desk-top.

I have a P4, 2.8GHz, 1G 800MegHz RAM and a GF4Ti4200 video card

The video card is a few "generations" old but I have had no issues with the "Huge" maps -- I suspect there maybe a memory leak which is exagerated by the map size ---- PURE GUESS:confused:

If there is anything you would like me to experiment with let me know!

I don't know davebkan. I haven't experienced those types of problems. Maybe you could try something a tad smaller and see what happens.

hey in the chat we wondering if a 500 x 500 for 2000 x 2000 square map is possible?

 I highly doubt it.

I have cut the graphics back to medium and the Huge map size certainly seems smoother.

When Im using this mod and play a terra map with temperate climat their are no mountains or hills

lol, it took me 32 minutes and 49 seconds to load the map, wil lit take this long to open up a savE?

It'll take longer because you'll need to add in the units and terrain improvements.

You may want to consider running a smaller map.

The most I've had to wait was probably around 5-7 minutes. This map is definately a resource hog, especially if you're playing on continents or pangaea maps. I have to restart my system before I continue a save game to clear out RAM so it doesn't get jerky and slow.

Jeppson, I don't know what could be causing that. I haven't tried any Terra maps yet. Does this happen every time?

Terra map should be even bigger than other map styles, maybe it's something about that.
