What have GMR players been doing when a player who goes into vacation mode is at war? I don't mind the idea of letting the AI take over for me when at piece but I don't like the idea of leaving when at war. I want to ask what other players experiences has been when they have to let the AI fight for them.

Did you come back to a devastated army or was everything okay?
Is it common practice to disable the turn timer when a player is at war?
Is it okay to start a war with a player who is in vacation mode?
Should I not tell anyone when I go on vacation mode to prevent other players from taking advantage?

Any other thoughts you have on the matter would also be appreciated.

I have done it once when at war. When I came back I was at peace and at 0 gold. I didnt have much gold, so it wasnt a huge deal. I wouldnt go to war if you know you are going to be away. The AI will mess up any plans you have. Even something like moving a settler into place to grab iron tiles can be slowed down with the AI movement.

As far as I can tell, everyone I am playing with are great people looking for a good game of Civ. So there hasnt been any abuse of the vacation mode. I would let the people know. That way if a deal looks wonky, then the players can refuse or counter offer with something that makes more sense.

I have a 7 day trip coming up so my opinions on this could change after that.

Personally, if someone tells me they are in vacation mode, I would not attack or do any deals with the AI until that person was back. It wouldn't be sporting (of course if they purposefully took advantage of this to be in vacation right before an attack I might not adhere to that rule).

I actually think that the AI will just sort of stand in place if you are fighting while in vacation mode so I would not recommend starting a war and letting the AI take over. If it's a small game and you know the players, I would just recommend asking for the turn timer to be disabled while on vacation. It's not like the game taking an extra week when it lasts a year will be that big of a deal.

...but should another player alter their strategy, and possibly end up losing the game because you are away? Also, If I believe that I am about to be attacked, could I not just "go on vacation" to buy the time I needed to prepare, even if only for one turn?"

The more rules, the more muck.

Okay so IF I go on vacation I won't be letting you know.

On a related note... Is there anyway of telling when a person is in vacation mode?

Yes. There is. Do you want me to tell you, cause NWO will know aswell if I tell you. :p

Spoiler :
When you look at the points their name will be replaced with the civs AI name, so Elizabeth instead of steam nick for England for example.

I don't expect anyone to alter their strategies for me taking vacations and I hope that you don't think I am implying that everyone should follow my personal rules of conduct. I am just stating what I think is fair and equitable in my dealings on GMR.

That said, I fully expect should any of the games I am in right now last until next February/March, then I will be in a great deal of trouble. I am taking a 3 week climbing trip to Mount Roiraima and Angel Falls in Venezuala, with I am pretty sure no internet access during the entire trip. That means if I am in a war, I fully expect to lose by the time I am back, though I might sue for peace under less than favorable terms should that be the case. Fortunately in my 10 games on GMR, I am really only at war in one of them, and hope to maintain that ratio.

We're not talking about rules, we're talking about standards of decency and good conduct, really. Nothing that can be enforced. If you choose to purposefully go on vacation mode due to in game events, like getting attacked, then I say more power to your attacker, and your loss for abandoning the fight. This is really just a step away from quitting a game, and should be treated as such. If you do such things, then you will carry this reputation with you, and suffer consequences beyond the current game.

Vacation mode is there for real life events, not to abuse for some supposed in game advantage.

That said, I'm fine with just putting a game on hold if someone is or will be at war. We all know the AI spoils things, and we do what we can to avoid that, or abusing it if it needs to be used. This is why we play with people, right?

One thing people need to be careful of when people are genuinely in vacation mode, is that the AI will initiate trade deals which a player probably wouldn't have. I think the decent thing to do here is to decline them.

Of course I would not abuse vacation mode, I only present hypothesis at the great risk of committing CiV heresy and being branded a witch.

2 or 3 weeks is little compared to a game of 1+ year length. Worth the wait i think. Even at peace where you can squander the AI gold and screw the game anyway.

Making deals with the AI would be out of the question in any situation. That would just be plain evil! The timing of a well calculated attack is where a problem may arise in my scenario. Say I'm in full unit production mode, my UU just popped a few turns earlier and I am ready for war and and your walls are not completed? Do I tell my army to wait, my foe of foes is on a holiday? That army costs me gold every turn to maintain.

Well, this is all hypothetical, and I think you've got the gist of how these issues would be dealt with in one of my games.

As for whether or not you're a witch, I make no final judgments until we run the Float Test. :p

Maybe you'll get better. :D
