GNP understanding needed!

After 2 finished games (both Space Ship losses) I noticed that I'm holding up well in every stat except GNP, where I'm less than half the average of the other civs.

I honestly have no clue what their doing and I'm not, but can anyone who is doing well in GNP give me some pointers? I'm assuming that this stat is vital and causing me to fall behind toward the late game.

GNP stands for "gross national products". It is a real macro-economic statistic.

this should give you a view of what it is for, but I have no idea how it is implemented in the game.
