The US Civil War story is coming to the big screen once again, they have made a movie from the novel.

Guilty as charged. I can't wait to see this movie, as I loved Gettysburg. Too bad they didn't get Martin Sheen back to play General Lee, but maybe Robert Duvall will do good.

For those that haven't read the book, the movie should focus on the experiences of several characters: Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jackson on the Confederate side, and Joshua L. Chamberlain and Winfield S. Hancock on the Union side. It deals with events from the start of the war up to immediately prior to Gettysburg.

Here's Robert Duvall as General Lee:

If G&G will take place before Gettysburg and Gettysburg has already been released, then hey will probably release a third movie from Gettysburg to Appomatox Court House.
Jeff Shaara has already written a novel that deals with this period. It's called The Last Full Measure. It wouldn't surprise me if they made a movie out of it, as well.

Have u read it? Does it sounds good?
Yep. Jeff Shaara is truly his father's son. his historical novels are at least as good if not better than Micheal Shaara's The Killer Angels (on which the movie Gettysburg was based).

Doesnt say anything about a third movie, but I hope they do too.

Based upon the book Gods and Generals, this is the prequel to 1993's Gettysburg, a TNT TV movie. Set just prior and during the Civil War, this is the true story of the Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorville.

A friend of mine was is a re-enactor (much like myself) and he got to be a extra for the movie.

Hmm i hope it will be historically accurate and that the south isnt show as a bunch of furiuos drunk rednecks....

I managed to obtain tickets to a sneak peak showing of this movie, which I just returned from. Here's my thoughts:

For one thing, the movie is 3 hours and 40 minutes. However, it really doesn't seem like it; the time really goes quickly. The main focus of the movie is Stonewall Jackson, and Stephen Lang did a really excellent job of portraying such a complicated character. Jackson was an extremely devout, God-fearing man, yet he was utterly ferocious and merciless in battle, and a little insane. Robert Duvall did well as Lee, but actually had very little screen time. Jeff Daniels reprised his role as Joshua L. Chamberlain quite ably, and many of the actors from "Gettysburg" return in GaG. Bruce Boxleintner (Gen. Longstreet) and Mira Sorvino (Fanny Chamberlain) could have been much more developed characters, but the directored decided to focus much more on Jackson.

My main beef with the movie is that it didn't present the most balanced view of the war's causes. Slaves are shown, but they all belong to 'noble southrons' who treat them like members of the family. Much less time is spent on Northern characters. There are very heavy, drawn-out moments where Stonewall is praying to God. Some of these probably could have been edited out. Another thing that bugged me is the fact that the story goes from the end of 1861 then immediately skips to the Battle of Fredricksburg. The Seven Days', Second Bull Run, and Antietam were all ignored, which is annoying because these were important parts of not only the novel, but also the war.

Overall, I recommend anyone interested in history see this movie, but the majority of the moviegoing populace might want to skip it.

:nono:For shame. Martin Sheen is a good actor, and did a credible job as Lee. Robert Duval is not only a GREAT actor, he is also southernor from Soth Georgia, aka Jacksonville. I would love to see Sheen play Sheridan sometime, but when you can get Duval, you want Duval.

Big Civil War buff...Civil War fruit in fact...crazy about it.

Gods and Generals looks splendid. Duvall, as one of my favorite actors...looks just like Lee with the beard. I think he shall be very good, though I've heard the accent he uses is a bit too deep...

As for the third film, The Last Full Measure is already in production.

This is the first day that I've seen commercials for the movie.

I have no idea when it's coming out and despite some dull periods during "Gettysburg" I love the movie.

When When When:confused:

February 21st, 2003, or so the adverts tell me.

And to Napoleon.

Boney, old chap, the religious elements were essential. There was far too little of it in Gettysburg to be believable. Without the religion of Jackson, there is nothing to the man himself, because religion made him.

As for the editing, you'll be glad to know that the DVD Director's Cut is going to be...5 and 1/2 hours...yep, that's right! And, Antietam will appear in it. Maxwell was pressed to make the film shorter for screening, and so he had to take out Antietam, though he wasn't pleased in doing so. The DVD will restore it...along with a heck of a lot of other stuff!

Saw the film. Loved it. Better see it quick, though, because the critics are determined to kill it.

Really? Most reviews i've seen are positive. Some people are calling for Steven Lang to get the Oscar nomination for his portrayal of SW Jackson.
