God of the Sea

Clearly the answer to this is its situational. But it is a widely held view that dessert folklore is the best of the pantheons. +2 faith per tile is exceptional, and also means you have a fair chance of keeping it. God of the sea isnt bad if you are costal. But on higher difficulties that bonus will not be felt for that long as once your city is converted you will lose the pantheon benefit unless you advance in piety. If you dont get a faith producing pantheon you can pretty much forget getting a religion.

Depends on the level you play at. Deity is insane with religion. I have seen flocks of great prophets heading into my territory. No idea how they get enough faith to send 5+ GP's into my lands at a time.

It is also difficult to get God of the Sea's benefit, as work boats require significant hammers, and there is usually other priority such as settlers at that point.

It's actually one of my least favourite and I agree with the others - faith production is of utmost importance if you want to keep your own religion!!

I couldn’t agree more! It would be a much more useful Pantheon if it gave “+1 :c5production: Production from Sea Resources” rather than “Fishing Boats”

When does DF give you 2 faith per tile?

God of the Sea is situational. It's pretty much a whales/crabs pantheon, since Tears of the Gods is better for Pearls.

It's also not that great in the base game because work boats are so expensive and you generally can't work them into a sensible build order until later.

That's why I'm not particularly high on it; early game is when the extra production from GotS has the biggest impact, but it's also when it's hardest to spare the production to make enough work boats to get a worthwhile return from the pantheon.

i think if you have a seafood start you should not build too much settlers, it's a crime to hold all that crazy growth. maybe 1 settler pre NC, 1 after (or get some in a war). so that you'll have enough time to build workboats.

fishing boat gives 1 food, 1 hammer from GotS and 1 gold, and costs 50
that is 3 yields and the payback period is roughly 16 turns what is good

in my experience seafood starts with GotS were the best. but maybe it is just me)

So what do you think of a desert salt start, if you think seafood is best? An example of that start in the Russia DCL, pretty sure it is still my fastest CV victory on deity.

seafood start is pretty common while desert salt start i havent ever seen

Salt spawns only on plains (and possibly grass?) terrain. The only time you will get desert & salt is when you have desert on only a portion of the starting area (e.g. you're straddling the border between plains & desert, or you have a few stray desert tiles next to you), with the salt on tiles with plains.

I only take GotS if there are AT LEAST 3 coastal spots with sea resources, and if DF/Quarries/Wine is gone.

I actually think Salt *can* spawn on Desert tiles, it's just not the most likely scenario. Don't have game files at hand to verify this at the moment, however.

EDIT> Yes:

^^I've played a few games where I had a ton of salt and desert, and the salt was on the desert tiles. I ended up with three desert cities and each one had four to five salt.

I was torn between the mother earth pantheon and desert folklore. I ended up taking the latter in both games as there was more desert than salt.

I've always wondered which is the best pantheon in those cases.

In any event--I was a powerhouse and very quickly.

Well if the salt were (mostly) on desert tiles, desert folklore would seem to be a no-brainer, because you'd get faith from the same tiles (mostly) as with mother earth and then some additional tiles; I can only see the dilemma if the salt is not on the desert tiles?

^^Yeah. I went with folklore. But the culture from the salt would've been nice (I think Mother Earth gives 1 faith and 1 culture). Desert Folklore is 1 faith per desert tile. I think I was debating all the extra culture I could have gotten.

In any event, I do take desert folklore with starts like that.

Such starts are totally amazing.

^^Wow--you're right. I just checked my current game (which I have salt and chose it).

I'm wondering why I thought it was culture and faith.

Maybe I was thinking the gold and silver one or something? I know something gives one of each.
