I need help with managing my economy. No matter what I do on warlord I end up having my gold go into the negative, research gets sacrificed for gold, without gold buildings and units are disbanded and everything goes to crap. If I could manage a positive influx of gold per turn I think I would be fine. Any tips? This issue is really driving me crazy. :crazyeye: Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.

Build more cities, get fast out of despotism, build roads on every worked tile and try to get corrency fast that u can build a markedplace in ur core cities.

Welcome to CFC, Broletariat!

There are a variety of things that can cause the problems you describe:

1) Not enough roads. Every time to you add a road to a tile, it adds +1 commerce to the tile. A citizen will have to work the tile to collect it.

2) Building everything, just because you can. Every building costs maintenance. Build the stuff you need to win, but don't build stuff you don't need. The Golden Rule of Improvements: A city needs nothing to survive. The question is what the empire needs for the city to have.

3) Learn how to use the lux and science sliders. If you haven't found them, hit F1. They're at the top of the screen and control the imperial budget.

4) Failing to have enough workers. Remember the roads I mentioned? You'll need lots of workers if you're going to road every tile. Shoot for 2 workers per city. Don't hesitate to buy them from the AI, if they become available, or to poach a settler pair here and there.

5) Putting a garrison in cities while in Republic. Monetarily, Republic is often the way to go. It adds +1 commerce to every tile already producing at least one. So: Non-riverside grass = 0 commerce. Add a road, it becomes 1 commerce. Switch to Republic, it becomes 2 commerce. However, Republic has no MP effect. So if you leave tons of spears sitting in cities safe from attack, that's all those spears do: sit. Oh, and cost upkeep if you're over the troop limit.

Really, the best advice I can give you is to post a save. It's much easier to tell exactly where the problem is if we can take a look at your game.

For a start aim to get out of despotism as soon as you can it stifles grown, is terribly corrupt and offers no long term benefit, a change to republic or monarchy either would serve you well on warlord.
Make sure you don’t overbuild buildings you don’t really need (all three) a temple, library and coliseum in each town, they all cost money in upkeep.
Don’t go mad building defensive units, once you’ve used your free upkeep you have to pay your army.
Use your sliders carefully, science is important but avoiding rioting is also essential often in the final turn of a science research you can reduce the slider down and still get the tech at the end of the turn.
Convert entertainers into tax collectors or scientists, both serve good purpose entertainers are only really needed if the towns infrastructure isn’t set up right for the size of the town and you have to much population.
Work the tiles round your core cities so that they are as productive as can be, mine and road hills and mountains, irrigate floodplains etc.

Thanks guys I'll mess around with the specialists. that should really help! Any suggestions on civs for a new player? (I played this as a kid, of course I didn't know what I was doing)

Specialists: Head to the War Academy and dig out an article entitled "The Role of the Specialist Citizen" by Bede. A couple of quick pointers: (1) Specialist output is not subject to corruption, nor does it benefit from multipliers (banks, libraries, etc.); and (2) the first pointer is why you'll see lots of players advocating "specialist farms" for the outlying (hopelessly corrupt) areas, where you water everything in sight and hire a bunch of specialists.
