I think BNW ruined CIV in multiplayer. You got zero gold early game which negates early game wars, you really cant do anything. How do you get gold in multiplayer when you cant trade your luxuries away ?

Trade routes! Also, religious beliefs and improving certain resources will give you gold early on.
Trade routes get ing raped when you play 4man ffa etc. You just cant protect them against human players. Also religion as only reliable source of gold seems like rigged game system.

Gold is a little harder to come by but it's manageable. Basically, instead of settling on rivers to get gold like you used to, settle near luxuries. Many luxury tiles yield 3 gold when improved. Connecting cities with roads and building markets also helps tremendously. If you want to initiate early war you will want to avoid making too many costly buildings.

I take it there are no city states in multiplayer... Or they're conquered early. It might make sense to team up with another civ (if the rules allow it), and agree to only fight each other once everyone else is gone... The money from trading would make you (theoretically) depend on each other for income and hopefully prevent a sudden DOW by either party, while making you both much stronger than the surrounding civs who are going at it all alone. Sounds a lot like Europe pre-WW 1... ;) Maybe I should try multiplayer one of these days.
