Just entered one a few turns ago, and it occurred to me that perhaps the science slider ought to be boosted on the short term, even if it might incur negative income. I say this because I suspect it would be possible to move very fast through a number of technologies (e.g., steel; refining; etc.) and open up what I would hope to be an unbridgeable gap between me and the next-closest rival. Then, when the GA has ended, I would propose to throttle back to a more "normal" science slider setting until such time as I can extort sizable amounts of gold out of the AI and get rivals to fund as much research as possible by subsidy.

I don't think the position of the science slider would depend that much on having a Golden Age or not, but having a Golden Age should make accomplishing your goals easier, whatever they are. I mean, I can also imagine that you're running zero science in your golden age, and spend it all on units. If that's your strategy, fine. I don't think a Golden Age is biased towards a certain strategy.
I wouldn't be afraid to run negative gold per turn. The first priority should always be to get those techs in as soon as possible, and losing just one turn out of financial prudence can lose you a lot of money for not being the first to that tech and not being able to trade it away to the AI for great gpt deals.

As a sidenote; if you enter your Golden Age it's wothwhile scanning your happiness. The effectiveness of the lux slider is bigger during a Golden Age, and that alone can often make it possible to up the science slider.
