[GS] Golden Gate Bridge Wonder gif

Golden Gate and Mackinac Bridge that connects Michigan's two peninsulas are the only two "mega bridges" that I can think of. And the Mighty Mac is STILL a terrifying wonder of engineering. It literally sways in the wind.

After all, the Golden Gate Bridge is only 8900 feet long... the Mackinac is 5 MILES long.

Sorry, my Michigan pride is shining through. California people and their petty little fair-weather bridges don't know nuthin' about building a bridge across an inland sea that's deeper than the ocean, has gale-force winds, and freezes solid. Rookies.

The Confederation Bridge linking PEI to New Brunswick is 13 km (8 miles) long and had to be built to withstand the heavy ice that blocks the Northumberland Strait during the winter.

It was promised to PEI back when they joined Canada back in the 1870s but it took a while for technology to get to the point it was feasible.

Bridge building technology has come a long way since the Golden Gate Bridge, but I think it's a good choice for a Wonder.

The Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West is very beautiful and interesting too. Over 100 miles through the ocean. It's of course several bridges, but the longest is 7 miles.

Sarah said no other bridges.
Hope is not lost. There will be a new placing condition available, so I can imagine some modded wonders could reuse it giving us more bridges. I could go for a „Modern Bridges” mod just for the pure joy of connecting landmasses, not necessarily being wonders.

The causeway over Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana is a beautiful feet of long-distance bridging, on a relatively boring drive. At least one of the two parallel spans is over 23 miles.

I don't think it's very deep water, though.

I can’t wait to see this used in useful situations, like connecting Great Britian to mainland Europe,

That’s the chunnel (“Euro”tunnel applies since Brexit? :p)

Denmark into supper Scandanavia.

That’s the Öresundbridge

Italy better access into the Balkan Peninsula

I think we don’t have one for that yet

On the other hand, this could be hilariously used (...) to just cross a one tile deep inlet.

Which, at risk of greatly miscalculating San Francisco Bay size, I think is what It does IRL :)

This boosts improvements tourism, Seaside resort is an improvement, Cristo redentor doubles Seaside resorts tourism. We gonna get some obscene amount of tourism from seaside resorts with both wonders. This also buff unique improvements like the château, making it a bit more viable, at least for cultural.

At least the Mac still looks like a bridge. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel here is a marvel of engineering at over 17 miles long, but it’s really boring to look at. (But it is great on less than clear days of not being able to see shore on either side! Not even a foggy day required!)

Yeah it's just a low bridge with no elevation since the tunnels are what allow ships to pass through. I've never been on the actual bridge, but have went over the tunnel many times in my aircraft carrier.

As a California person I feel obliged to defend the GGB. What really puts it over the top for me is the beauty of the surrounding area. You have the Marin headlands, beaches, islands in the bay, and the city of SF itself. Sunsets. Fog. From every different angle, time of day, or weather condition, the bridge is framed in a beautiful and unique way. Plus the color is just so...iconic.

Since they are making this a cultural wonder more than an engineering one, there really is no other choice IMO.

Even as an engineering wonder it needs no defence. The longest suspension bridge until 1964 and the tallest until 1993. It's a deserving wonder, and a truly iconic construction.

I didn't think anyone is saying that. It's the right choice.

I drove that once and it is super boring, but I also couldn't believe how amazing it was that I was driving in the ocean.

Now why you'd actually want to build a super expensive marvel of engineering to connect Key West to the mainland is another issue.

As someone who is a fan of bridges, I'm just happy we get one of them in the game, and since this is one I have actually visited I can tell you is it a glory to behold and well worth the world wonder status

Its the iconic status that does it. Got to be the most famous bridge in the world.

Your US-based pride is showing guys, there were/are other bridges that are very impressive feats of engineering. Look at the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge
or Tokyo Bay Bridge+tunnel

Looks like it is going to be an interesting wonder, I really like the idea of wonders not only giving a bonus, but interacting with the map as well. :)
Øresundsbron should be the first priority
it has both motorways & railways

Do we even have that many 1 tile coast to coast gap to make sure that this wonder will not run into the same problems that Huey Teocalli had at launch? That was my only concern; otherwise this is an awesome looking wonder.

I believe the map script may have been tweaked to create more snaky land forms suitable for canals. That may result in more potential locations for the Golden Gate Bridge, too.

Maybe we could get Iron Bridge. An early industrial wonder. Better than the badly named Big Ben.
And Stonehenge is disappointing to visit.
Spoiler :

It's almost as old as the USA.

What's that in metric?

Hmm, questions... when this wonder is finished, will it automatically place roads in the adjoining coast tiles or does the player have to do that? If it's the latter, does that mean you'd have to request a trade route that crosses it in order to make the roads? Or use two (expensive) Military Engineer charges? Also, are we safe in assuming that ships can still use the water tiles beneath the Golden Gate Bridge? I definitely like the wonder, but I'd sure like to know a little more about it.
